    Maple trunk chop

It will help people give you better advice if you add your location and zone in your profile. But here are some general points. Freshly repotted trees drink a little less water, so be careful not to over water. You don’t want recovering roots to stay wet for too long. Water the tree when the...

The wires that are biting and are being removed now, are they the same wires you and Bjorn placed back in spring 2015?

Thanks!;) Hopefully the market will be absolutely flooded by the thousands of trees given away or sold by contestants here! When I first started out, I stayed away from pines altogether because I felt I lacked the knowledge and skills to provide care and attention to pines as bonsai. I had...

Spring leaves: Post Your Tree's New Duds!

Nearly all of the seedlings I collected last spring have survived. Sadly the one in my avatar died midsummer. But these didn't... These are the ones I plan to give away at next club meeting.

I think I might have a nice yamadori?

I would research as much about juniper styling and care as you can before even thinking about digging. Check out Ryan Neil and Bjorn Bjornholm on YouTube. They have done some exceptional work on world class junipers. And they have a lot of important information for begginers. Also browse this...

    Waking up

I was away for two weeks helping with the floods and came back to most of my deciduous' buds bursting and this trident fully awake! Luckily CA weather has been more wet than cold. Temps have only went below 30F a handful of times in my city.

juniperus communis what would you do ?

Junipers may turn brown in winter but they don't go fully dormant like deciduous trees. So you can fertilize year round. I use Cottonseed or rapeseed cakes and apply folliar feed biweekly.

juniperus communis what would you do ?

Junipers love folliar feed! I have no experience with miracle grow though. I use fish emulsion because it's absorbed fast by folliage, and breaks down slow in the soil, thus protecting delicate new roots (sometimes chemical ferts can damage new roots). Side note: roots, nebari and trunk base are...

    Amur Maple seedlings! Bonsai noobie

I'm not well versed on Amur maple, but maybe when it's pushed a few more pairs of leaves and they've hardened up, they can go outside for some sunlight.

juniperus communis what would you do ?

Many people new to bonsai make the mistake of wanting to turn their tree into a "Bonsai tree" immediately. Not realizing that the tree is nowhere near ready the be styled. Most of these people ignore the advice they get on forums because the advice is usually to let it grow a couple years and...

juniperus communis what would you do ?

Make damn sure that it's healthy! Loads of fresh green growth all over and a well developed rootball should be established before any aggressive styling. With junipers the strength comes from the folliage. Removing any folliage now would be detrimental. Good luck!

    Amur Maple seedlings! Bonsai noobie

Sounds to me like you should do some more research. Find some bonsai books, and join a local bonsai club. Growing seeds is a good start but very boring work as all you will be doing for the next 5 to 10 years is watering. Also you will not be able to grow maples indoors. Good luck!

    B2_second juniper

This plant does not look healthy enough to reduce the rootball by 2/3. Also maybe a coarser soil mix.
