This app has made my Bonsai life easier...

Fantastic! I just moved into a new house this summer and constructed my bonsai garden in a south-ish facing direction with several large trees blocking late fall to early spring sun shine. This should help ease my mind. Thanks!

Maintaining Large Collection / Refined Collection When Traveling

Are any of you utilizing "secondary water" that is not culinary or potable water? I ask because this is the system available to me but I already have issues with lawn sprinklers getting plugged up with debris. A filter is the obvious solution but I also worry about the water quality and have...

    Rescued Juniper Project

I saw this juniper neglected in a shady breezeway and thought it would be worth asking about. The old lady couldn’t believe her luck that someone was willing to haul it off and offer her $20 to do it! It was rarely watered, didn’t see much sunlight, and spent 15 years in this one pot...

    National Forest Service Permit

I collect in Utah, Moke. The only place I've had success getting permits is through the BLM offices. I pretty much walk in and ask for a Transplanting Permit and pay the fee. National Forests have been reluctant to offer permits except on rare occasions in particular areas during specific...

    All aboard the Mugo train!

I have two mugos both with what appears to be V graft scars in the trunk. I don’t remember what type I bought but I may have to reconsider my efforts if in fact they are grafted. Any thoughts?

    Field Growing Resources

I am lucky to be buying a new home with enough backyard to consider field growing. The property is 6a and I am considering transplanting RMJ's, Pinyons, and maybe some native deciduous. I know there are many factors to consider but I am not finding much information online directly related to...

    Got gambels?

Here is a nice Gamble Oak I hope to collect in the near future. Aaron, did you collect yours all at one time or did you do anything special when collecting?

    Collecting Stop

I was there for work so it wasn't a big deal. It made me realize there was a lot I didn't know, and should know, before collecting anything.

    Collecting Stop

It was last year sometime in March. Definitely a guy that was somewhat smug about the whole thing. I probably should have tried harder and will give it another go next time I head that direction. Thank you for the advice!

    Collecting Stop

Last year I was excited to do a little collecting here in Utah. After quite a few calls, I learned there was a short window of time to collect subalpine firs and nothing more. Somewhat discouraged I turned my attention to Wyoming and s the town of Douglas where permits "were" available. Once...

    Bristlecone pine?

I live in Ogden, Utah but the tree came from Wasatch Shadows in Sandy, Utah. I couldn't find the tag, however I'm pretty sure it was called out as a Aristata. I do recall this tree being the smallest of many much larger (and expensive) options.

    Bristlecone pine?

Here is what I will be working with: A nice little nursery stock Pinus Aristata with a decent trunk. I've also been seriously teasing my 6 year old son that he will need to take over and pass along responsibilities to his son. Teasing but serious.

    All aboard the Mugo train!

At the nursery loading up on landscape plants I spotted this Slowmound Mugo and spontaneously added it to the day's haul. Now that I've spent some time studying it, I'm wondering if it may be worthy of a pot and serious effort? I'm far from experienced and would appreciate some advice. In the...
