    Benches finally all but finished

I've been working on this for several months and finally got it to a point I wanted to share it. Longest part was the raised grow bed. Still have a little more gravel to put down but besides that it's finished. At least finished for now because are things like this ever really done? Enjoy.

    Should I bother with airlayer?

I have this river birch I planted in my yard two years ago. Two of the trunks the tops died out after a bad storm we had. All last year I thought about cutting those two out and leaving the one good tree to grow but I haven't done anything yet. Now I'm considering doing an air layer or two on...

    Tree off the Ohio river

I live 10 minutes from the Ohio river and have never gone down there looking for trees, that was a mistake. I got off work early and the river is down right now so I thought I would walk around and see if I could find anything. I found some pretty cool stuff farther up on the bank and I'm sure...

    Eastern red cedar

Just dug this beast up today. It ended up being a little harder to get than I thought it would because the soil was so full of large rocks. In the end it did help out because there was no large tap root and the rootball was pretty compact. Dug this one because the trunk has some good movement...

    One ugly mulberry

This thing is so ugly I like it, problem is I'm not sure what to do with it. just noticed it needed to be repotted so I took care of that tonight. exposed a little more of the trunk and put it at a slant compared to what I had last year. Think I like it better like this but still not sure how I...

So what's this hiding on roots

So I collect this tree today and while I'm hosing off the dirt I find these clusters of what looks like eggs all over the roots. Never seeing something like this before I'm wanting to see if anyone knows what they are. Just to be safe I took all of them off before I repoted the tree.

    Deciding a maples future

I have a maple I collected fairly late last year I think June or July. I was just looking at it this morning and trying to decide where to cut it back. I left it pretty long when I collected it and now it has a pretty strong leader toward the top. Problem is I think it would make the tree too...

Pot newly bought trees or wait

just bought two new trees, one a trident and the other a crape myrtle. The trident is in a shallow nursery container with most of the roots covered in dirt. The crape is wrapped in plastic and has no pot but roots are covered in dirt. Neither are trying to push buds yet. Should I leave them as...

    Styling help

This is a honey suckle I dug up last year. I'm trying to decide the best way to handle the two large chops in the trunk. All the top growth is all new from last year and each trunk has two new strong leaders. The two ideas I have is pull a graham potter and do a lot of carving to the trunk on...

    Raised bed soil

i plan on putting in a few raised beds this spring in my yard. Going to use them for trees I want to grow more and thicken the trunks. My question is what kind of soil should I put in them? Is just plain top fine or should I mix anything with it like live park, small rocks or sand. Obviously I...

    Unexpected visitor

Well my father n law knows I like trees and came over with a mulberry that he dug up at his house. After cutting everything back this is what I ended up with. Maybe I should have just told him to throw it in his burn pile but I put it in a pot. God help this poor tree if it survives.

Same rules for box store trees as collected?

just got a crab apple at lowes for 50% off so ended up $12 couldn't pass it up. Doesn't look like its grafted and has an ok sized trunk. I'm guessing same rules apply as a collected tree? Should I not chop it and bare root it? Should I just plant it in the ground for the year and work on it next...

What did I find on trip in tenn

sorry for the crappy pic but right now it's as close as I can get. Leafs are thin and kind of look like a lace leaf maple. Strange thing is they are white and pink and looks to have a couple green ones also. It's a small tree only about 10" tall and about the size of a pencil.

started thinking about this so I wanted to see what people's real world experiences are. After seeing a few post about people digging "out of season" and also doing it myself on a few trees I dug this year would like to hear who dug what and how far out of season. I know there's a million...

    Is this thing pooping?

Just found this on my walking stick part of my landscaping. Is it pooping after eating on my tree or is it doing something else? I've seen some catipillars like this around lately in the yard but not on any of my plants yet. Does seven kill these things and should I spray the tree to keep more off?
