"Don't let me go to the nursery on my lunch hour" my burning bush

So, yeah. I went from nothing two weeks ago to two burning bushes, three juniper, an unknown azalea, a cotoneaster and a rescued crabapple. I have asked the ladies in our records department to strike me in the head if I say I am going to the nursery. Here is my $12.50 find, a euonymus alatus...

    Help Identifying

This summer our public works department cut down a few trees. Some of them are now popping up from the old roots. I can't remember if these were flowering with red fruit, but I am thinking they were. I know that is like, not helpful. Anyway....any ideas? I'm digging them up before they mow them...

NOW WHAT!?!?!?!?!?! It's in a 4" pot. Not even sure what type of juniper. I saw it and even my girlfriend was like "you need that".

"Gee, bonsai are cool....maybe that is something I should pursue!" said the Big Dummy

My last lunch hour was checking old (but sadly dead dead dead) shrubs pulled out of the local cemetery by our city's public works. I realized I had time to go to the local nursery so I walked around and took pix of the tags so I could research. Got back to work and told several people about what...

ugh....forgive me and my newbie haste....

Sorry all. I have resisted a rush purchase until today. Yes, I succumbed to buying a little Buxus sempervirens , well actually there are two . I know this was probably dumb but for $4 I thought "what the heck". So here they are. I am guessing since it is very late I just leave them in their...

    Simple tricks for outdoor photography

While going through Walter Pall's Amur maple thread (mind boggled) I read the brief discussion on photographing it and the lighting and thought I should share a quick and cheap tip. I used to shoot bodybuilders and fitness models. I had stuff published in some of the biggest bodybuilding...

So I went for a walk....what is this?

Went for a walk along a local lake and in between casts I checked the shoreline. I found a bunch of these. Twisted and small. Are these fringe trees (Chionanthus virginicus)? White Ash (Fraxinus americana) Are they worth trying? I mean they are all gnarly and twisted, but is that enough to make...

    Is this a Chinese elm?

While walking down to the river I spotted this tree. Maybe 15' tall, straight and 4-5" thick. The leaves ar just a bit over an inch long. So here are my questions: Is this a Chinese Elm (I think so) Even though it is very straight will it have potential? Should I cut it or dig it up? Those chew...

New to bonsai and have a handful of seeds.....

I posted an introduction to the new members forum and mentioned there I have some seeds. So for my first bonsai I thought I would look at some stock at the local nursery. I wandered through the junipers and stopped to admire the Japanese maples. I have always loved their look but the onse they...

A New Guy to All of This

Hey everyone! My name is David and I live in North Central Ohio. I'm 48 and only mention this because it does have bearing on why I am here and why I am interested in bonsai. I have lived my life bouncing around from topic to topic, hobby to hobby. While it has made me well rounded (at least I...
