    Firstbranchbonsai purchase

I waited until I saw back budding on old wood as the sign it was safe to start working the tree. Took three growing seasons post collection before mine did that.

    Firstbranchbonsai purchase

Yeah I’m really pushing some artistic design limits with the angle :). Watering it is a real pain.

    Firstbranchbonsai purchase

Going good so far. It pushed strong in spring 2019. Reported it this spring, will let it grow unchecked for at least a year, possibly until early fall 2021 before I touch it again.

    Firstbranchbonsai purchase

My thought process was to do the hard styling while the tree has the most roots....which is now....it will never have more roots than it has currently/this growing season. I thought about reporting first. And waiting on styling. That would’ve meant doing a hard styling in the future on a tree...

    Firstbranchbonsai purchase

I removed a lot...but the (bad) pic hides depth, there’s more green left than represented in the picture. Feel confident with the action, this tree has been growing untouched for three years since collection. Pot is packed with roots, time will tell.

    Firstbranchbonsai purchase

To keep track of this one....spring work complete. Initial working, rough structure set, will grow freely this season with plans to repot spring 2020. If only I could take a good picture....

    Fish emulsion vs hydrolysate

That’s a good podcast. Ian stated the heated process denatures good components of the fish hydrolysate. The cold pressed version doesn’t.

    Amur vs Trident vs "Japanese"

Amur, yes. Buried in snow, handles a zone 4 winter without problem.

    Amur vs Trident vs "Japanese"

Amur wins the hardiness battle in this group....sees temp swings of over 100 degrees in Minnesota. Pros: Bullet proof in the cold, multiple flushes of growth all through the heat of the summer.

Most excellent Peter Tea blog post about summer work on Maples!

Agreed. As long as you’re trying to thicken all parts of a tree, let everything grow. If you’re focusing on one part, say for example the trunk, removing the other pieces will focus all the energy there.

Most excellent Peter Tea blog post about summer work on Maples!

My uneducated opinion...The total overall growth is the same regardless of the amount of shoots/sidebranches left on. The difference is the total growth is distributed roughly equally over the total # of branches. Reducing to one main leader focuses 100% of the growth to that single piece...

Wire choice when wiring trees into pots

Dido. Cheaper, stronger, and less stretch compared to copper or aluminum. A 250’ roll on Amazon is $10.

    Firstbranchbonsai purchase

Purchased this Picea Pungens from Todd Schlafer’s Firstbranchbonsai page. 3.5 inches at the base, 18” tall, nice movement and bark (bad pics). It was my first time purchasing from Todd, he was great to work with. Quick responses to my questions, and he did a great job protecting the tree...

    Down To Earth's Diatomite Rock

Doesn’t totally absorb the cost difference, but if half a bag of optisorb or 8822 lost during sifting, the actual price is doubled....just one more data point to consider.
