Spring/summer has finally arrived. I have begun to work on some of my Ficus Burtt Davyi. I have a large number of them in different stages of development but I find it difficult to part with them. Usually I wait until it gets warmer and they begin to bud before transplanting. Enjoy. Hank

    Ficus Natalensis

In the winter I cut back on the watering and fertilize about once a month. On my website under the care and maintenance section there is a long write-up about Ficus Natalensis.

Initial work on a fused trunk fig

Most of my figs are fused trunk figs. After less than 5-6 years trees of this quality are possible . Ficus Natalensis Fucus Natalensis, a strangler fig, is a good specimen for making a fused trunk bonsai. The rooted cuttings fuse together reasonably quickly. After about a year or so the...

    Acacia in Serious Limbo

Because of the bark and the elliptical leaflets my guess is that it is an Acacia Galpinii. I think the tree looks ok. As long as the tree did not have to endure cold nights with temperatures below freezing it should be ok. When you repot in the spring remove as much of the tap root as...

    Beer can bonsai

In New York State there is a 5 cent return fee for an empty beer can. I think I would rather have the 5 cents. A much better idea, in my opinion, is to use a piece of drift wood or a carved piece of wood (or styrofoam) and grow the tree over this in much the same way that one grows a root...

Growing of a Ficus through a Tile

Most of my Ficus Natalensis are fused trunk trees. To get good results the trunks should be wrapped (I use Chinese string but raffia is fine) and then allowed to grow. I simply bind together rooted cuttings and have never used a plate. To get a nice buttress and good nebari the cuttings can...

    A Fig Over Rock

The root placement of this tree is really nice. The trunk of the tree, however, lacks taper. Have considered shortening the tree. You might consider this. Regards Hank

    Refining a Ficus Natalensis Shohin

Ficus Natalensis is, in my opinion, one of the best tropical species for bonsai. The trees are fast growing, very hardy and adapt well to growing in containers. If the material is well chosen good leaf reduction can be realized. I have number of Natal figs of various sizes and I am...
