    Reid's shohin thread

Repotting season is on! I’m trying to follow some recent guidance and advice to go smaller in pot size and bolder in pot color. European White Birch in robin’s egg blue Chuck Iker round pot. True to form I misaligned the tree in the pot — this is the front of the tree but just barely is not...

    Final countdown for entries!

Whoops! I missed this. I thought it was the end of the season. I can get pics ... within a week?

    Japanese larch progression

The summers have been brutal for three years running. Landscape trees have major dead sections all throughout the region.

    Japanese larch progression

I don’t think so. I wired the tree as usual in the early spring. It’s done totally fine with this wire before. My technique has improved a lot and I break so many fewer branches than I used to in years prior. The top escape branches are unwired and unbent. The entire tree was non-responsive...

    Japanese larch progression

RIP. It never woke up this year. The cambium remained green and supple though April, but the buds were all dead. I think it was killed by a stint at 17°F from a surprise winter storm.

    I built my first bench

I’ve made two more benches, this time more wide, less tall, and a touch less complicated. I also used an uncolored waterproofing treatment on the tops. The materials are embarrassingly expensive, now — at least twice what the original bench series had cost 😳 The prior benches are now six years...

Regarding the winter storm, I’ve filled my garage with nice trees, so there’s no room for these projects. I’ll tuck these all together against the house and out of the worst of the bitter winds. We are supposed to remain below freezing for at least 48 hours and may have some major ice...

I’ve pared down the group to 10 trees: B, C, D, E, F, G, J, K, N, and P. This year I inadvertently allowed some to grow escape roots into the pumice beds on which they were placed. That was a great boon to their strength and health — a lesson for the future. I also focused quite a lot on...

    The Tree Thread

No thread. It’s the most boring progression ever… 😂 Step 1: buy a stupid quantity of plug-grown saplings and plop them into 1-gallon cans (March 2017) Step 2: keep them alive for years, but don’t give them any attention Step 3: offer this ugly thing to a friend, who turned it down (February...

Dwarf Scots Pine literati. It’s part of a large batch I got in 2017, so it’s about 8 years old. I’ll continue to remove branches over time as I finalize its design and build out a few pads. It’s pretty thick — that’s 4 awg on the trunk

Show us your Oak (Quercus) Pre-Bonsai

I’m still enjoying the clip-n-grow to keep this Coast Live Oak dense and vigorous June 14, before: June 14, after: December 3, before December 3, after; a bit of an edit to remove extra branches, improve structure, and to knock back the strength of terminal buds I’ve still left up to...

Engelmann Spruce mother-daughter yamadori from the Cascades. I think this was its third wiring. I need to do more detail work. Seems like it might benefit from a bigger pot.

This one is promising. It’s my favorite of the lot. Previously I had assigned serial “N” as its name It’s tiny. That’s the best wiring I could do with these chunky hands. Looks like I need 16 AWG copper.
