    What you want to happen is have vigorous early growth to thicken new branching. Wire them down in late spring and fertilize heavily. Next year, prune it for structure and repeat the process. In a few years of this you with have strong tapered branching. After that, go for ramification.

    Only Taiga Urushibata was from Japan. The other two judges at the National were Mauro Stemberger from Italy and Lindsey Bebb from Austrailia.

    If by taking an average tree and dressing it up in fancy surroundings then yes, that could describe a fair amount of American bonsai. I doubt it makes it a style.

    I think, from my experiences meeting bonsai artists and seeing many "styles" of bonsai, that what is emerging as American bonsai consists of yamadori trained as bonsai. Having been shaped by uniquely American natural conditions these trees may be inherently American much like European yamadori...
