    Twin trunk Quaking Aspen

Not that it matters, but your tree doesn't appear to be Quaking Aspen (populus tremuloides), but instead, it appears to be Silver Poplar (populus alba).

    Air layer failure?

Most people report that the dissectum types are almost impossible to air layer. Good luck.

    Frustration with market

For those who expressed an interest, I have begun posting this season's trees on ebay. My selection will not be as large as normal since I'm still recovering from the losses of winter 23/24. That being said, I try to price my trees reasonably. I do consider these pre-bonsai though I've done...

    Sickly maples

If I had to guess, I would agree with @bwaynef . Here in the PNW, if maples sit in heavy, wet soil over the course of winter, you're asking for dead trees come spring. The damage doesn't show until the weather warms and they "start" to leaf out.

    Frustration with market

I typically sell my trees on eBay. I usually will post in the For Sale section of this site, to let people know when I'm posting. I'm still out of town until the end of the month, but hope to have my first sales going by the first week of May.

    Frustration with market

You are correct! I was just back in Seattle for a few days to attend the local bonsai society sale. My trees look great this year, which is definitely an improvement over last year where a lost many to peculiar weather. I should start selling by May 1st at the latest

Air layering purchased crab apple whip and Kwanzan cherry

Crabapples airlayer with ease. I was able to easily root Kwanzan cherry in sealed container with bottom heat.

Prunus Incisa "Kojo-no-mai" - Design Advice

For me, I find that stone fruits and malus all seem to prefer organic soil that holds water, but still drains well. Actually, I find that except in winter, drainage isn't an issue since they seem to drink as much water as you give them. It may require a bit of experimentation on your part, but...

Prunus Incisa "Kojo-no-mai" - Design Advice

FWIW, I have the same issue with both prunus and malus in that they have aggressive roots which easily colonize their pots during the course of a season. I keep mine in deeper pots, and even so have a difficult time keeping them moist by the end of summer because the pots are so full of roots...

    Collected Crabapple

FWIW, I prune all of my apples and especially the crabs to downward or outward growing buds. I cut back until there are 4 buds max. Typically, they grow all season and require multiple prunings. Also, as you may have noticed, the roots will colonize the pots in no time, so be heavy handed when...

Starting Japanese Maple hardwood cuttings indoors

If I remember correctly, many have stated that they have had very poor results trying to root Deshojo cuttings. Some say that they are impossible, and that air layer is the only viable option

How much trunk chop is too much? (Ulmus americana)

Let's hope it maintains its variegation this spring when it leafs out. I'm unaware of a variegated Siberian elm.

Fall pruning on Big Tooth Maple?

You might try Montpelier Maple.....native as far south as the Mediterranean coast and known to grow in chalky soils and limestone outcroppings. I grew it in Wyoming and it's a tough species

    Desert Trees Zone 10a

I've experienced light freezes there, but it's been several years since. It was down around 28 or so overnight for a couple days in a row. Surprisingly the only damage I noticed was the juicy new growth on bougainvillea and ficus. Everything recovered within a couple weeks. Concerning your...

    Desert Trees Zone 10a

I am routinely removing featherbush (lysiloma) from my garden in Palm Desert. If I lived there year round, I would be tempted to grow it as bonsai. They are super fast growing even in containers. If you're interested in giving them a try, I'm sure there are plenty I could give you. We will...

    Drought Resistant Trees

I definitely vote for adenium as a potential candidate. I have mine growing on a south facing wall where it must be at least 140F on those 120degree days in Palm Desert. They are on a drip, but don't receive a ton of water and seem to love it. Bougies would also be an excellent contender...

    Maple seed propagation

I have found that they will often drop seeds as a response to drought/dry conditions and/or extreme weather. I personally harvest seeds in October/November before winds and heavy rains dislodge them, but ensuring that they are completely ripe

Anyone? Korean mountain ash (Sorbus alnifolia)

    Japanese maple pre bonsai

For those of you who have followed my tree auctions the past year or two, I'd just like to let you know that I have just posted a few trees on ebay. I'm very late compared to previous years because it's been unusually cold and many trees sustained damage. I did lose a bit of stock as well...

    Repotting vs bud break

The thick, taperless trunk is the remnants of a sacrifice branch. I should have cut it back hard before selling, but I like to leave those things for the new own to decide. Cut it at any time....this crabapple seedling is super tough and shouldn't skip a beat.

    Japanese maple pre bonsai

@pandacular Thank you for the promotion! I greatly appreciate it. As I mentioned to you, I unfortunately won't be back to Seattle for a few weeks. I'd love to have you stop by when I get back so you can look through the nursery and see what might work for you. I'm excited to get this years...

do Deshojo, dissectum, arakawa, bloodgood grow from seed?

I've found that some varieties are more likely to exhibit parental traits than others. However, factors such as proximity to other j. maples can definitely affect this. Alternately, I have some trees that are a total crap shoot and throw out every possible combination of leaves, colors, and...
