The passing of a formative Bonsai Artist (Vance Wood)

Heard the news. Rest in Peace Vance. He was always willing to help others who came to him for advice on this website and he was genuinely a nice man. Despite having never met him in person, I think I will always be reminded of him every time I encounter one of those mugo pines.

And the 6 Year JBP from Seed Winners are....

Congrats to all participants (even those who didn't submit) and a big thank you to @Bonsai Nut and @Walter Pall for organizing and judging the submitted trees. I've thoroughly enjoyed following everyone's threads along the way.

    Dawn Redwood Question - Fluting

Here's my contribution. This is a Dawn Redwood from Morris Arboretum from a few years back. Quite large if I remember correctly.

    Seed Division: Palafr01's Ginkgo forest

These pics are from late September showing the scale of the leaves and the arrangement from the front and above. I counted at least 3 spots that could use trees on the left side of the planting and at least 2 spots for the right. Overall the year was so-so for the forest. I did manage to...

    Seed Division: Palafr01's Ginkgo forest

Update: I had to change out the soil in August due to poor drainage. I lost 3 trees during this time which I replaced with some others that I had on hand. The pics below show the new arrangement. I don't love the arrangement as much as the first but with some additional trees it will look better...

From last year...Why the cicada chose to go all the way to a distal leaf to emerge is beyond me. (Previously was profile pic)

    Is this juniper dead?

@forg0t Sorry about the lost tree. Even though it is dead you could always try to use it in a group planting of some kind. Just remove some of the bark or let it naturally weather. With some extra stones and junipers it could make for an interesting scene.

    Palafr01's p. Densiflora globosa

As an aside, has anyone else encountered stalled growth like this? If so how long generally did it take for your tree(s) take to rebound? For context: Most of my pines had started pushing growth back in April and finished leafing out by mid to late May so this tree about 2 full months behind.

    Palafr01's p. Densiflora globosa

Update: The tree survived the winter but it has not had an especially good year. The photos below are about 10 days old now but they show what I believe to be a watering issue. Since I really didn't change much of the old soil I believe the soil hasn't been completely drying out in between...

    Slowmound Mugo pine advice

Small update 1 year since the last post. Growth was strong this year so I continued chasing the foliage back. This is most evident on the right side where I took off ~2/3 of the foliage. My hope is to shift the strength/energy of the tree to the left (the side I'm keeping) so that I may get...

    Seed Division: Palafr01's Ginkgo forest

So here is the final arrangement. Due to size of my pot, some of the original 11 trees had to be removed and replaced with more suitable ones. My philosophy being that I wanted to remove as few roots as necessary in order to fit the trees in the pot since the material I was using was so young...

    Seed Division: Palafr01's Ginkgo forest

Update: Finally rearranged the forest! After careful consideration I decided to abandon the dragonstone as I felt it would not hold up to the freeze-thaw cycles of my area. Instead I purchased some aquascape stones from PetSmart labeled "mountain stone" for use in the planting. The arrangement I...

    Throw this away?

I would ground layer it to restart the nebari. It might even root higher on its own if it is planted into a deep container.

Doug Fir needles turning yellow or is it just me?

@Fir-man Do you still have some of that succulent soil around for a close up pic? I think your soil isn't draining too well, and yellowing needles on conifers is a common symptom. Being in Washington state you guys get a lot of rainfall, meaning your trees probably aren't drying enough in...

    Amur maple advice

Concerning this tree I will probably just repot it into a better soil to get better drainage and allow it to recover. If it proves really vigorous I may do an air layer at the highest point, but it wouldn't be a high priority for this year.

    Amur maple advice

Thanks for the response @rockm, given those tendencies how do people develop amur maple then? My gut tells me that frequent small cuts are the way to go, and over time a nice trunkline and branch structure can be made by selecting the best options as they appear. It is currently what I have...

    Amur maple advice

Hey guys another post here about a troublesome maple that i have. I have had the tree for 7 years and due to a combination of poor soil for a number of years and neglect it has ended up in this sorry state. 2 years ago i placed it in an APL mix to improve the roots but the akadama degraded. So i...

    Twin Trunk or Informal Upright?

Nice magnolia. I agree with the above plan, perhaps you could use one of the nearby branches on the other trunk as a sacrifice to increase the tree's overall size. Essentially the yellow cut line would form your primary branch and you would continue the trunk line from the opposite trunk
