Amazing photo essay. Thanks for showing us what supporting a national bonsai culture looks like. Nothing like that here.

What’s Wrong With People - Eastern Leaf Theft

What started out as a heads-up to stolen material has once again devolved into a typical Bonsai Nut shit slinging contest. What's important is not what any of you believe, because I couldn't care less, but that a bonsai enthusiast has had personally valuable trees stolen. I've always thought...

    New Japanese Black Pine

    That's scarier than removing branches!

    New Japanese Black Pine

This is a little closer to what I'd like to see, Brian. I will probably repot next spring, using somewhere in #3 as my front, but maybe tilted a little more to the left to try and cover up some of the roots on the left. I'm not sure what that would uncover on the right side though. Do you have...

    New Japanese Black Pine

But I have to drop that first branch for Dav4! Ok, I see where you're coming from. That's a possibility. Like you said, a fairly advanced move for a trunk this thick.

    New Japanese Black Pine

thanks, you've both given me a lot to think about. I'll take another careful look at the tree's roots and nebari Number 5 is actually #2 taken from a lower angle to see the underside of the canopy better. Are you saying to make the two major bends sharper? Thanks for the comments.

    New Japanese Black Pine

Frank I'm not sure I'm seeing what you're seeing. Any suggestions for a planting angle change and best nebari?

    New Japanese Black Pine

I'm leaning toward somewhere around #3 as the front. #2 has a lot of crossing roots and #2.5 places a big root coming right toward the viewer. I'm not unhappy with the planting angle. What would you suggest? I do have copper wire! I've been stocking up. Frank, you're suggesting a repot next...

    New Japanese Black Pine

Hi everyone. Up for your consideration is this Japanese black pine I picked up this January 2021. Per the seller, it has been in this pot for 2-3 years, and all I have done so far is water and fertilize it. This is my first JBP. I've been paying attention to the pine gurus here on Bonsai Nut for...

    Tree never leafed out

No. Fertilizer would be counterproductive since the tree is not taking up any nutrients. Haven't thought about pruning. Have you read something about this?

I have a korean hornbeam in the same situation. fingers crossed for both our trees.

In that case, I personally like the base better with the first branch on the left (original front)

Before and After, opinions please! my first bonsai.

Pretty much anything should work. If you ask 100 people on this site, you'll get 100 different answers.

    They're coming! Are you ready?

I have cicada killer wasps in my neighborhood. They're enormous. So maybe more of them this year too. You should see them flying off like dumbo with a cicada in their clutches, struggling to stay in the air.

Before and After, opinions please! my first bonsai.

It needs to grooooowwwwww for a few years Up-pot every couple of years. Lots of fertilizer. IMHO It's hard to leave our trees alone, but that's what you need to do. Keep up the enthusiasm!

What is the possibility of having a Classified Section?

I think it's a good idea, organizing it better in the way @penumbra suggests, with prices posted. If there are no prices posted, I click away from it, always. I don't want to be sending a bunch of pm's, only to find it's out of my price range. Just let us know up front like they do on FB. It...

How do these concrete pots handle repeated winter freezing? Should be ok I imagine.

    Overwintering with a mini-greenhouse?

This was my first year using a tent-style greenhouse. The first one blew away, so I built an internal frame from 2x4s and now it's strong enough to withstand the strongest winds we've had so far. It has 6 windows and the doors roll open. That's the only method of temperature regulation. I don't...

    Bonsai fertilizer

I just added a supplement, a Japanese product called HB-101. I can't say yet if it's helpful or not. Anyone have any feedback on it? I'll take every added percent of benefit I can.
