    Pseudomonas syringae?

sorry I have no new news on cures for Pseudomonas. I have tried Zertol instead of pharmacy Hydrogen Peroxide. I had no plant tissue damage even at 5% active peroxide. Diluted 30% active Zertol until it was about 5% . I had no damage to plant tissue. Algae and some moss was burned, which was...

Learning the trees on my land (anything useful?)

The genus Diospyros includes maybe 100 species, most are tropical. This genus includes the "true ebony" species. Even American persimmon, if near 100 years old will have about 4 inches diameter of true ebony heartwood in the lower portion of its trunk. Though it's very rare to see old growth...

Learning the trees on my land (anything useful?)

About the American persimmon tree, Diospyros virginiana, they are monoecious, meaning each tree is single sex, either all male flowers, or all female flowers, at least for 98% or so of the population. So the tree that flowers but doesn't fruit, it's a male. Keep it. Plant a batch of seedlings...

ERCLover’s Loblolly Clump with a Twist

I've seen a fair number of these types of projects started over the last 20 or more years. I don't recall seeing many 5 or 10 year updates. The trees with a simple twist seem like it should work. Lack of follow ups suggests people run into problems down the road. Please update even if it is a...

Encore azalea as bonsai tips and tricks

Interesting factoid If you prune an Encore azalea in late winter, removing most if not all the spring flower buds. As the azalea grows over the spring and summer, you often get a fairly decent flush of flowers in the late summer. But of course, you missed the spring flower show. So generally...

Species Study - Acer Saccharum/Acer Saccharinum

Over in "Flowers" Gabler posted flowers of Acer x freemanii - if you are interested. Not as red as Acer rubrum, but more colorful than Acer sacharinum flowers https://www.bonsainut.com/attachments/img_1121-jpeg.535715/

Species Study - Acer Saccharum/Acer Saccharinum

I think sugar maple, Acer saccharum, is a species that needs to be worked with, and collectively we should document our successes and failures because I think this species could make an excellent bonsai. The point of bringing up JM was to demonstrate by comparison what traits we look for in...

    Koto Hime Maple Progression

Just watched your video. You are an excellent grower. You have a professional looking nursery. Very Nice, And great work propagating all those maples from one tree in less than 5 years. (first post in this thread was 2018, so I assume you were working with this maple only about 5 years)

Species Study - Acer Saccharum/Acer Saccharinum

I should try my hand at a few sugars. Not really trying to rehash the first couple pages when choosing a tree to put the effort into to bonsai, one should think about the "bonsai traits" of the tree. For example Japanese maple, Acer palmatum (JM) leaves that reduce well, especially with...

What kind of bonsai types/cultures are there?

A couple thoughts. @Thundie - first off, I have to call "foul" on referring to Japanese bonsai as "green helmets". Obviously you never visited Japan, and your reading material choices were poor choices. There are some very mediocre "Introduction to Bonsai" type books and articles on internet...

    Flowers 2024

Dendrobium orchid, for the orchid insiders Latouria section hybrid. Individual flowers will last 4 to 6 months, sometimes longer. Sadly they are shy, tend to look at the floor, and have no fragrance. Easy to grow with half day sun and frequent water, no dry rest.

The rare cultivar... and where you can buy them thread

I dug some photos of the Ficus from Chiapas mainly to see if I could, they were from 3 computers ago, and a little difficult to remember where to find. These photos are not of a tree at its "bonsai best" but clearly show how it is different from a typical willow leaf ficus. The tree that...

The rare cultivar... and where you can buy them thread

You know ..... that bonsai is about the appearance of the tree on the day displayed, cultivar does not matter at all. At least in theory. Rare or not should never be considered in judging bonsai. A tree is solely judged on its appearance at the time of judging. Only after the tree excels in...

    Carving a Bougainvillea

You know, I never took plant physiology course, or other university botany courses. I worked in a chem lab focused on concrete for 40 years. So while I can talk "science-y", I don't have university botanical training. Though I did sleep with a PhD Botanist off and on for a decade or so, does...

    Carving a Bougainvillea

Yes, and no. I have seen cyanoacrylate used exactly as you describe, Often with good effect. However, my personal experience, a single use, not replicated. I used it (superglue) to harden wood on a 40 year old pomegranate. Initially all was well, but then black fungus began attacking the wood...

Finding Soil (Pumice / Lava) in Chicago area after relocating

Thanks, Unfortunately I do not do any propagating or selling of trees. I have trouble enough keeping my small collection going. But thanks for the vote of confidence. Maybe we'll meet at a Midwest Bonsai Society meeting, or see each other at one of the shows. Or run into each other at Hidden...

    Juggling commitments please help

Ventilation for greenhouses or conservatories is a MAJOR cause of plant death. I know of several important orchid collections wiped out because of power failures on a hot day. Is there a way to leave a door open or something that would improve the ventilation. Perhaps have a friend come over...

Summer 2023 Hall of Shame (extremely hot summer)

Living near Lake Michigan, my 100 year old house never had air conditioning installed. In summer, you simply opened a window and a cool breeze would come in after dark. Weather has warmed, the "Lake Effect" that was so reliable in the past has failed several summers in the last decade. In late...

Finding Soil (Pumice / Lava) in Chicago area after relocating

@cbrshadow23 Welcome to the Chicago area. The only local place I know to pick up pumice is Hidden Gardens in Willowbrook. They are a southwest suburb, the nursery is along a frontage road, a little "Hidden" but not hard to find with Google maps. website...
