    Worm Castings

been mixing worm castings and composted chicken manure and filling tea bags. this is the only solid ferts I have given my bonsai for the last two years. they all seem to love it! I make my own worm castings and composted chicken manure. I also feed fish emulsion every few weeks. I'm...

I know I often shovel snow into my cold frame during winter to water the trees. maybe that is why. its just easier than hauling water out when the hose is froze!

    Preferred Oaks

Any advice on digging? I had heard you can’t remove the taproot. Or must do it in stages, true? True or not? I’m excited by what Leo is saying about burr oak. I have been eyeing some up but others have said the leaves don’t reduce so I was hesitant.

Nice day in the neighborhood. Why not showcase??

The destroy it just for fun seems way more likely than sell it. Think of how difficult it would be to sell a bonsai. Where would you sell it? Many people on here complain that they don't even have a bonsai nursery within 100 miles of them.. what average person even knows that these things are...

Nice day in the neighborhood. Why not showcase??

Daniel, sorry you got ripped a new one for this post! doesn't seem justified, but, I guess I am thankful for the reminder from those that have been ripped off that bonsai are attractive to thieves. Its pretty surprising since I can't imagine what they would do with a tree? they couldn't sell...

    Native Species Only

I'm from nh originally, Its been mentioned but bears mentioning again. Pitch pine. I've had great results, barks up early, grows vigorously, responds well to candle manipulation by putting out shorter needles and back buds more than most pines. Don't try and dig mature specimens from sand...

    $35,000 bonsai shears--discuss

I'm calling bs on the fact that it takes him a week of 10 hour days to make a pair of shears that he sells for $1000 usd. Thats starvation money in Japan. on the other hand, if it weren't for people paying ridiculous amounts of money for finely crafted objects I couldn't feed my kids, so I...

    Purchased Nursery JBP

they were fine but... a few years of getting away with something doesn't mean it works longterm, I think I got lucky... Last winter we had below zero temps for like a week... not sure the JBP would have made it through that! I was glad the tender stuff was in the bulkhead, even in there it got...

    Purchased Nursery JBP

I do see Scotts in the wild, not tons, nothing I would call yamadori.. but, you could get a free start to dig if you found a seedling. I haven't seen Scotts at bonsai west but they might get them. I know @Soldano666 wired up some Scotts and was selling some.. he might have one for you? he's...

    Purchased Nursery JBP

I am in Mass, probably same 6a zone, I have kept a few medium size jbp for six or so years now and a bunch of seedlings I started a couple years ago. In the past I mulched them into the protected side of an outbuilding but then I heard stories of them not making it through our winters. Last...

    Underdogs Hinoki Challenger

looking at the pictures of the tree when received I think you have done ok. Looks to me like half the foliage was dead when you got this. when foliage looks yellowish like that its been my experience that it is already dead, no coming back. I would also suggest getting another hinoki, just so...

    First large yew project

I have found that you can cut them to no foliage the spring BEFORE digging and sometimes they will bud all over. The sometimes seems to be dependent on the age of the yew or possibly the cultivar, around here the oldest ones are a different cultivar and more recently they are mostly hybrids...

    Japanese maple #26

If you are interested in critique, mine would be the rock, which, from the photos and the particular angle you have chosen for the front, the tree seems to be simply leaning against, not clasping or growing over... the design looks unstable to my eye. Thank you for sharing all you have shared...

    benches oriented east-west or north-south?

I'm moving my bonsai to a new part of the yard and wondering if you prefer benches stretched along a north-south axis or an East-west one? I see some pros and cons to each. p.s. I'm in the northern hemisphere.

How do you store trees in Winter?

this past year I think I finally got it right, no death, and no two stepping.. I put tender stuff in my bulkhead... underground, insulated door. and used something like the wireless refrigerator thermometer below to watch temps ($25). Bulkhead stays 30 -40 deg. all winter and everything was...
