    Need a Doc?

I have this little what I assume is a maple that I grew from seed. Last year after years of growing I air layered off the top. The top is going great but the bottom has looked like this since spring. It is planted in potting soil & lava. Has done great until now. Acts like it doesn't have any...

    New Maple Air Layer

I was messing around and wanted to shorten a maple that I have it is about 3.5 feet tall so I tried an air layer. I know my timing is suspect. I did the work at the end of July. After 1 month I can see several substantial roots. I figure I have about a month and a half before first will start...

What is going on with this elm?

I had this elm pop up in my yard and I just let it grow, then about 2 years ago I put it in a pot. I liked it because it had really small leaves. Last fall I cut the top off before putting it into winter storage. Tonight I was looking at it and noticed the sprouts coming from the cut have large...

    I Had a Kingsville Boxwood

Well I hate even to share this but I need some guidance. A small Kingsville that I have had for 20+ years. I always stick it in the ground behind the garage for the winter. It has always been fine. This year did the usual. A dry winter with little rain & snow. With everything going on the...

    To Cut or Not?

I've had this bogevillea for quite a while and haven't done a goid job with it. I'd like to cut the trunk below the "knob" but I'm wondering how low? Looking today I think I'd go even with or just below the surrounding swirl, what would you call it? What is your opinion?

Does a Quince plant need dormancy?

It is time to put away the plants for the winter. There is some thought that it would be nice to have one of our Quince plants in the garage. It stays about 48 - 55 in there most of the winter with modest grow lights. Any thoughts?

Best bet to get this old elm to root

We were working on a project last week and there were some scrub elms along the edge of the property. I have always liked this old bark but all of the trees were too big to dig and I had to take what I could get right away. So I cut this branch off of one of the elms since I liked the bark. I...

    Not Bonsai LILAC BORER

I need some ideas as I have a 30 year old lilac tree that has borers. The tree has been going down hill for the last couple of years but I thought it was because of winter damage. Now I see that it has borers (sp?) It is about 90% gone and I see that it has about 8 - 10 holes that I can find...

    New Boxwood Project

I collected this boxwood early this spring. It has been doing quite well through root trimming, potting and some initial trimming. I'd like to try to get into an "oak" style but as I look at it tonight it appears to me that it may have too many branches co ming out of the crotch of the tree. The...

    Help with identification

I pulled this tree from around my birdbath last fall and threw it in a colander so it most likely is a bird transplant. Looks kind of like the raintrees but I don't think that they are around here. Any idea?

    Keep or Toss?

I collected this elm this summer as I was wanting something with a thicker trunk. I chopped it and trimmed the roots to fit a large pot. I left the one branch to try to thicken the base. My thoughts were to create a hollowed out type trunk, stressed tree etc. Now cleaning up for winter and...

    Need a Doctor

I have another thread for my burning bush but thought more views would be possible in a new thread. I am guessing that these are spider mites? Confusing that you can see them, the black but what is the white? Do you just wash these off or I have some fungicide that says it is for spider mites...

    Mature Elm Air Layering

I purchased a bag of Perlite last year and was all set to go air layering. Well as we all do I didn't get around to it. This spring I have located several older elms that I have permission to do air layering on. Reading quote a few of these posts I still have a few questions. Using these...

    I'm tired of it!

All I see on here is look at my tree, it's leafing out, look at my flowers, how pretty. Here are my "nice junk trees" Under about 2 feet and more coming. What's fair about this? Just kidding I love all your trees, just letting winter wear me down. Only another month. Carry on! Don't forget...

    J Maple Cuttings

I have been trying to get cuttings off of my oversized landscape JM to root. I have tried planting them in the ground, planting in a pot with course soil mixture, in a pot with course soil mixture and a plastic bag over them. All were wounded and treated with growth hormone. I could get...

    Heat or No Heat

I know that bottom heat helps seedlings get started but does bottom heat help cuttings to get going? Will it give the cuttings the little extra to break out the roots which seems to be the hardest part? I almost always get leaves but usually fail with the roots. Thanks. Jamie

    It's not a Bonsai but

I need some help. As you can see this Japanese Maple is growing out of the area that it is planted. About 20 years old I need to trim it back to where it looks nice in it's spot. When you do a google search you can read on how they can't be trimmed etc or see someone trim out the deadwood...
