    CM BONSAI!!

Ordered 5… I mean, I have the pond baskets already. Can’t wait. I have two others that are progressing slowly due to my neglect, but these will be well tended to.

Don’t go to Champion Nursery in S.C., off of 707

I think this guy values $$ above all else. I didn’t want a pindo palm delivered and planted, so he didn’t want to be bothered.

Don’t go to Champion Nursery in S.C., off of 707

Good advice, and apologies for bringing my drama to the forum. But, I’m going to try to “let it go” first.

Don’t go to Champion Nursery in S.C., off of 707

Thank you, thank you; you are a wise nut. I knew that at some level, but that is just what I needed to hear to put it to bed. I should plan a trip up there, maybe in the fall? I can’t find any clubs around here and it would be real nice to get at least some meetings on my schedule, at least...

Don’t go to Champion Nursery in S.C., off of 707

He did write a (criminally libelous imho) fake review of my review. Which I reported to BBB, but I don’t have much hope that will come to anything. I debated calling the local non emergency police line, but I get a bit nervous not knowing the local politics real well around here. I know he is...

Agreed, and I shouldn’t have brought it up. Somehow it is easier for me to refrain from name calling.

Don’t go to Champion Nursery in S.C., off of 707

No indication that it was for holding, but I could tell that they were set aside. I spent about 1 min to check the tags to see if it had cultivar info, but it didn’t, so I walked away. I was only there for a grand total of a 15 min, max.

Don’t go to Champion Nursery in S.C., off of 707

I moved to S.C. over the summer and was quite excited to check out a nursery just down the road from me. I browsed for a while and came back to a honey suckle looking plant that I was thinking on, but didn’t get a chance to ask what species it was. I looked at a few azelea that were up on a...

The passing of a formative Bonsai Artist (Vance Wood)

I was a lurker in the IBC days, but lurk I did. The first club meeting or workshop for me was around 2007 or 2008. I had some books but the forum was/is my main source for information. Vance was a king of sharing information and stings a little that I won’t read any more of his fresh takes on...

The passing of a formative Bonsai Artist (Vance Wood)

I was just thinking about Vance in recent weeks when considering when to repot my nursery mugho that is sitting on the ground next to my bench. Whether he knew it or not, him and JKL were my main mentors through the first half of my bonsai career. I think the most important lesson I learned...

    Juniper Id

I opted for the conservative approach of breaking up the surface soil, scraping it off and drilling a few air holes around the perimeter with a very stiff piece of wire. I washed the surface too and let the water soak through a few times and covered lighly with long grain spaghnum and course...

    Juniper Id

I see buds just starting to move and we are past the last freeze. But, it did have some work done over the winter with the cut and style. I have a next pot picked out that is wider and shallower, at about the same volume? I do have a larger fallback pot if I want to give it some room to run.

    Juniper Id

Good advice all around. Thank you @Japonicus ! For whatever reason the water was soaking in a little better yesterday. Maybe I just rough up the surface and then wait for shoots to do a full repot as you suggest.

My friend recommends to leave the wire on for over a year. I see his point to let it go.. but, I think I pay too much attention to let it bite real hard.

    Juniper Id

Same old. It is looking healthy, but hasn’t been repotted in a while. The water pools for a moment, at the surface of the pot. I was thinking I’d desoiliate the surface and put some aggregate on top, maybe mixed with some spaghnum?

Is this pot too big for the tree?

I agree that it is not the perfect pot, but you could give it a go for a year while you look for an even better pot? Shouldn’t harm to have a little extra room.

If you are just starting out, look for some elm volunteers around. I’ve pulled some out of parking ties and similar environments.. I call them “yankadori.” They are fun and pretty forgiving. Help you learn thinks like watering and repotting, and it is not heartbreaking to lose some.

We moved to Myrtle near Murrells inlet over the summer, so I am still getting the local scene wired, and eager to hear others advice. JBP do fine here and so do elms. The jury is still out on my beloved hemlock (Tsuga c.). Maples should be fine as well as Crape Myrtle, and most juniper.

Really nice looking pots. And really unique yet classy contours. You have been leveling up while I wasn’t paying attention.

To bonsai pot or grow box

I agree with @flor1 ; it is not far from a nice tree there in my opinion, with a little carving and wiring. You don’t really need a grow box for thickening, but then again, some time in an Anderson flat could really boost the health and development.

    Cork or peely bark JBP?

Yes, @River's Edge is the man. And he has solid advice all around. I had an intra-state move over the summer so decided to go for a smaller pot for this guy, but I’m sure I delayed development by not repotting back into the Anderson flat. Fortunately I am not too much in a hurry.

    Cork or peely bark JBP?

Marlon and I did some work on a bunch of my trees. He wanted to remove the first branch on the sacrifice that we jinned. He said the branch above the Jin would make a better “tachagari”(sp), if it were brought down to take the same space as the first branch. He is probably right, but I convinced...
