Thanks Judy for all your recommedations. I do have a couple of heat mats. If I keep it in a unheated garage and place the mats underneath the tree, won't it dry out the roots?

Hi Judy Any ideas on how to winterize my BAC? I purchased it in May and did a lot of work to it as far as wiring and pruning. I may pot it next spring if it survives our zone 5 winter. Any thought or ideas?

Mine has it too. I don't think it's a fugus. Sometimes it happens at this time of the year when it's has long exposure to the sun.

I've used cocoa shell in my garden beds. They have a nice chocolate smell for a couple of days. When it gets wet sometime it gets compacted and something like a fungus gets attached to the big clumps. I wouldn't recommended for Bonsai use. It's more like a mulch.

Does anyone live in zone 5a and have a pyracantha? I found one tree that I like a local nursery but I'm not sure about how to care for it in the winter since it's an evergreen. I don't see how it will survive a Chicago winter. I'm getting a lot of conflicting information about it.
