bwaynef's brimming-backyard barrage of burgeoning bonsai

Running late but just potted 2 Kotohime (inspired by Darth) from 1G cans and really dense soil into Anderson flats. I only took a pic of one. The other is largely the same. Also potted up a Carolina Hornbeam that has little taper but lots of movement. No pics of that one until the end of the week.

    Japanese maple raft project

I'm positive this isn't an original-to-me idea, but I'd donate to the cause to get matching pots to put each of these sets of roots in their own pot. That might be too gimmicky though. I really like this tree. You're doing well by it.

    Leggy old Itoigawa

I would STRONGLY recommend your first order of business is a thorough repot. Everything else follows from there.

    Projects

I'll allow it! I know they're early in development, but on that last one, I'd consider trying to slow down the front left tree/trunk in the clump as it looks significantly thicker. If that's a perspective issue, ignore. Otherwise, maybe something as simple as pinching the tips on that trunk...

Prunus Mume Propagation by Hardwood Cuttings During Early Winter - The Peter Adams Method

Leafing out means very little. It’s better than not, certainly. I’m particularly encouraged by the secondary push of growth that’s happening now. (My Sango Kaku cuttings beside them aren’t very happy right now.)

My neglected Trident: Hopeless or Hopeful?

I think you can work on both at the same time.

My neglected Trident: Hopeless or Hopeful?

I would've airlayered off the top and abandoned the base. Now that you've done initial work to improve the base, it may warrant keeping. The real value in this tree is the tree sitting at the top though. It is worth the effort to airlayer it.

    Bald Cypress Root Aphids

    Is that a 20:1 mixture of water & 3% h2o2? Or 5% h2o2?

    Koto Hime Maple Progression

These are developing really quickly! Now I'm in the market for a kotohime.

If you know, you know. Ended up being a little late this year.

Largish shimpaku juniper -- first styling

One tight bend on the right branch to build the sub-formal and what he drew is immensely achievable (and possibly the best use of the material, particularly if you're intent on keeping the base and not focusing on what can be airlayered from the ends). You'd have to cut a channel and bend it...

Is there such a practice as cutting off some roots of a Juniperus procumbens 'Nana' and grafting them to a lower position for more even nebari?

I just re-read the OP, ...and I probably need to retract my comment. The scenario I mentioned doesn't really apply to the one you describe. (I was describing essentially approach grafting. You'd have to scion graft, or at best peg-graft (think threadgrafting but w/o going all the way through)...

Is there such a practice as cutting off some roots of a Juniperus procumbens 'Nana' and grafting them to a lower position for more even nebari?

When I was last at Boon's, he said he is planning to graft roots on juniper trunks to shorten the tree. What you're asking about isn't exactly that, but it seems possible.

Also found one more trident. I applied callusmate after the picture.

    The 2024 Bonsainut Maple Project

I’m working with another Japanese maple and needed a few more branches in place. I shouldn’t threadgraft when I’m a hurry because I didn’t absolutely hit my spot on one of these but it’s close and I’m the back so hopefully it’ll do. Also, I’ve never used an approach as a bridge to close a wound...

    The 2024 Bonsainut Maple Project

I’ve got a couple more maple projects. First a formerly triple trunk maple. The middle trunk died off shortly after I received it into my care. This year I’m thread grafting trunks from below. I’m also thread grafting a branch where I coincidentally had an approach grafted branch that came...

How much foliage removal on juniper?

Here's a japanese article translated to english and published by Bill V. That's a pretty good indication of what is necessary ...as well as what's safe. Tip growth, particularly on runners, will drive recovery. (This from an article on developing an overgrown tree and building new branches...

The one sitting on the picnic table was repotted last weekend. The one sitting on the ground was repotted last night. They’re both JWP. They were in heavy organic material but it did drain. I suspect they’ll like the new soil. Hope they do anyway. I’ve got some big plans for these but they’re...

    The 2024 Bonsainut Maple Project

I'm not going to wait any longer. I've got a few tridents that I'll be working with, and may add a couple Japanese maples and maybe a few others as well. I don't have a final plan for any of these tridents, though I think the larger of these will end up in the 15-18" tall range when it...

    Root Grafting vs. Ground Layering

If by parallel you mean approach grafting, the scion material I had (that is, the seedlings) were prohibitively small for something like that.

    Ground layer a Stewartia

Interesting that according to this link, I get hotter sooner than you do. I suspect the humidity difference to go with the heat plays a part though. https://weatherspark.com/compare/y/17066~1956/Comparison-of-the-Average-Weather-in-Clemson-and-Montclair <edited to add the link!> Another...

    Root Grafting vs. Ground Layering

https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/failed-airlayer.59239/ <-- I got tired of waiting on a trident to cooperate after 3-4 years and threadgrafted roots from seedlings. That said, I'd failed 3-4 years, 5-6x. If I had it to do all over again, I'd probably still try to airlayer it before...

    Ground layer a Stewartia

    1. There's some discussion whether layering at bud-push is better/worse than after leaves harden. I've done it both ways but didn't see a ton of benefit doing it at bud-push. I may do that yet, but I think the bulk of my airlayers will from now on be after leaves harden. 2. Assuming the soil...
