Hi, im new here. been interested in Bonsai for a while. had a few but not had much luck with them. ive had a couple of trees for a few years now and they are doing well. one is a Japanese holly but i wanted help identifying the other.

this is the tree and i was after some advice on it. its never looked very happy, the bottom leaves are looking yellow within the tree and the bottom is covered in something sticky, might be from the flowers.

Looks a Boxwood...

Sticky doesn't sound good.

Sounds a pest.

Some of those shoots look excellent though so it cant be bad.

Welcome to Crazy!

It does look like Buxus more than Ilex Crenata, to me as well.

Sticky stuff could be sign of aphids...

Where is the second tree?

Edit:
The yellow leaves are toast.

No idea of the species. The slime could be from immature scales. Try insecticidal soap

could my problems be related to whatever this is on the leaves? just spotted it when looking for aphids!
im not sure what the brown spots are (removed a few) or why the leaves have a white deposit on them (maybe from hardwater spraying?)

i've also just re-potted him, there was almost no soil in his pot so hopefully this will help.

The brown things are scale. If not a lot of them, you can scrape them off with your thumb nail. If there are too many search for scale on the forum to find out how to control.
