My family name is Barboza - my grandfather immigrated from Capo Verde. I speak some Italian and can curse like a sailor in Portuguese!

You see, now I know you must be a good guy ;)

Only 1wk of stratification? Why? Common information appears to say at least 1 month...

Good question. Just following the instructions here:

https://bonsaitonight.com/2016/08/17/grow-japanese-black-pine-seed/

In Bonsai Today #20, Matsuo doesn’t even mention stratification

But we’re in this to learn - I’ll cold stratify for a week and report my germination rates. I also plan to sow the floaters and see if their germination rate is unacceptably low.

Could you stratify a small portion for a month. Since various variables are not the same one can not reliably compare germination rates.

Planted 116 of the sinkers after 2 weeks of cold stratification. I’ll plant the other 120 after two additional weeks. Planted all 27 of the floaters.

Here’s what I do. I use a bulb pot. Fill it most of the way up with a sterile seed starter mix and water thoroughly. This is a peat-based mix and pretty hydrophobic when its dry. So water several times to make sure that its moistened all the way through.

When you’re done, spread the seeds more or less evenly across the top of the moistened soil. You might want to mist them with a fungicide at this point also. Some people have trouble with damping off. I did not do this, in this case.

Once the seeds are sown, cover with a 1/4” or so of the seed starter mix.

Then into the greenhouse. I apply bottom heat with this:

Now just wait.

I’ll plant the other 1/2 of the sinkers in two weeks time.

Yes sir - it’s a mix of sleet and freezing rain right now, but it’s going in the greenhouse. I have a roof ventilation fan that comes on when it gets above 80 and a heater that comes on when temps drop below 60. I’ve seen it get as cold as 55, but it rarely gets above 80 - small greenhouse, big fan, little heater.

This how we sow them, much easier to transfer to 4" clay pots as individuals.

Soil is a basic peatmoss / perlites blend from Canada and added in 5 mm silica
based gravel to improve drainage. Sterile.

Getting ready to plant around February.

I’m doing seedling cuttings. I’ll transfer them to individual cells at the same time I take the cuttings. Because of that, what I sow the seeds in is not so important- they’ll only be in there 3 weeks or so.

wow. those look great. i dont have any sprouting yet. They are outside though. Have been bringing them in when cold though. I moved one small batch inside on a west facing window to keep warm and still get light, hoping for some early sprouters. I really wanted to try the seedling cuttings before i do my main batches.
