I'm building an oak grove composition and I need more small oak trees of varying sizes. I'd be interested in buying most any of the California live oak species not just agrifolia.

Looking for material ranging from 1-2 year old stuff to more mature specimins. I have a few trees already but I need some trees in different calipers. Please PM me or post what you have. Thanks.

These folks are legit: http://www.forestfarm.com/quercus-agrifolia-quag033

Their plants are always healthy and robust. If you mention bonsai in the notes of your order they will select better trees for you (especially with low branching). They’re not cheap but I have been pleased with what I got. They’re a non-profit, so think of the cost as a donation to the common good ;)

I'll give it some consideration, I'm afraid of expensive shipping charges though.

I recently picked up Q agrifolia and Q wislizeni from these guys - http://midvalleytrees.com/ Nice movement in lower trunks. They were $6 for one gallon and $12 for 2 gallon pots. Trunks were about 1 - 1.5 inch dia. I realize they're a trek for you (near Visalia), as they were for me. But good trees and good price.

Yeah, a bit too far for me. These are the oaks I have so far. I'm going to ask the nursery I got em from if they have more in their growing area I can pick from. I'm not looking for anything too big but I need a wider range of trunk sizes.

Sounds like your best path to success is tapping into a collection opportunity.

We've seen the costs added up.
On the lavish side.

A tank of gas and a tent go a long way.
One scouting weekend, one collecting weekend.

There is a row of them somewhere in cattle country.
What to barter with a rancher?
One day collecting one day mending fences?
One day Stickrooting Prarie Dogs?

At $100- $400 a pop plus shipping this x number of trees...
Likely from different places....

Doesn't someone grow em out there?

A nursery in Oregon?

Think outside the particle accelerator....
Wait...that's not where you were was it? Lol!

Tap in!

Or tap out!

Get em!

Try the Jonsteen Co. They have small plugs and bigger of a few different oaks, on sale this week at 15% off, about 6 bucks for the smalls. Great outfit to do business with in McKinleyville, CA. Large producer of redwoods and others. Worth a look

These native California oaks are surprisingly hard to find in your average nursery. Maybe just too common in the landscape. That's why I was so pleased to finally find them in a tree farm "only" 3 or 4 hours from me. Good thing I had other reasons to be in the neighborhood.

A lot of people in my club start them from acorns, but of course that costs you time.

Well, yeah, I have forty acres that's pretty much over grown with live oak. Everything from acorn sprouts to twisted old big trees. I'm just beginning to develop the resources, but hopefully we'll have some oaks available soon.

Isn't Barry (@barely) in your backyard? He's "Mr. Cork Oak", but maybe he would also have Coast Live Oak. I missed his sale last year, but I have a nice little cork jbp I bought from him at Bonsai-a-thon.

I've bought oaks from him before. Lot of good larger material last I remember. I'll shoot him a PM and see if he has smaller stuff.

I had the same idea a few years ago, maybe six, and I bought two dozen, they had a sudden sale to FB group for a buck apiece. I have nine of the coast live oak that have been chopped last year and root worked and repotted this year. They could have been set as a group planting this year, but it I lacked the container for it. They all look like the pic now, some bigger some smaller. If you can afford bigger by all means do it, but us po' boys gotta start small and do the time. IMG_20170906_072813505_HDR.jpg

I've been growing oaks since I started bonsai but that's not too long since I'm only 3-4 years in. I think I have a very good understanding of their growth habits and how to develop them properly for bonsai. It helped that a lot of people local to me grow them and there were knowledgeable nutters who gave me advice.

I have some pretty nice mid sized oak but I want to keep it as a stand alone tree. Oaks develop crazy fast here so I'm fine with starting with a bunch of young trees. I'm just looking for stuff with good lower movement and branching.
