@ defra Yes, initialy the leafs of an elder are relatively large.
Hm, I reckon the larger and defined the Crown grows the smaller the leafes will take shape.

@ Tieball @ just.wing.it Thank you so much for your appreciative words!

And an update of the alder again:
The brook_alder had some weather-problems this year.
Even though we had alot of rain this sommer,
the alder had been very unlucky with two hot days without watering
(I had been on a business-journey).
She decided then to throw most of her leafes. And now I decided to send her
in her "ahead of schedule" fall. The tree is for sale.
A regular bottle of whisky (0,7 Liter) as a scale ...
And I swear! I have not dried the bottle!
It ist for my neighbour, because he helped me with some holiday-care, when I was on vavation ...

Wunderschön Arnold! I just saw it on the Bonsai Flohmarkt fb group. This tree would look good in any collection, so may I ask why you are selling it?

Well Tentakel, I simply have got too much Bonsais and Pre-Bonsais.
I barely can manage the maintenance duties ....

But the true reason is:
I am not a collector.
I am a hunter and developer. Other people can do the refining-job better than me.
I love to have more and more new projects.
'So much ideas in my head, and so less time to realise them ...

That's the problem with Alnus Glutinosa. It is a species that consumes a lot of water and if you want to have smaller leaves you need to reduce watering. Finding the balannce is complicated.
Have a nice day.

Tentakelaertje (Maarten ?!), Wilson, Zaratrusta, Waltron and Giga!
Thank you so much for your kind words.

Hm, the leaf-thing ...
On that issue, I am going with Zara.
Minimizing the leaf-size will definetly be possible, but not that easy.
To be honest: I have no clue. I would go for try and error as well.
The tree is for sale, but if the alder stays by me, I will report about that leaf-thing.

Arnold. What was your collecting process for this tree? How many roots were there when you dug up? Does it root easily when cut? What time did you collect? When did you trunk chop? Spring before budding?

Hm, collecting the tree has not been a "rocket-science" as far as I remeber.
I digged the alder in mid of march and chopped the trunk instantly cause the trunc was 11 foot five.
And yes alder is rooting easy.
This alder (under my control) was bitchy with twig-drying.
I mean from time to time she decided to throw some twigs ...

Thanks. What kind of root conditions did you have when lifting it?

Conditions? I do not know if I got you rihht, I think, it depends on the soil the tree is living in...

Did you have a lot of fine roots when you collected or were you left with many large cuts?

Had the tree already been budding when you chopped it or was it prior to coming out of dormancy?

Ah yes, the three had buds, but I chopped so far that no branches were left.
Every branch had been new.
There were a large root-cuttings, almost no or a few fine roots.
Later on, the trunc got fungus in the dead wood...
'Can hardly remenber the details of the collecting process ...
I did the dig ... without careful preparation ... just gigged the alder ...
