Were the pots directly on the ground?
Yes. Often though, it appears that roots which have escaped will clog the drain holes.....and that's what leads to problems during winter rains. I'm uncertain where you are, but we usually see 1-2 weeks of below freezing weather. However, it's always very dry when we have that type of cold.

Thanks rodeolthr! Usually it doesn't freeze much here although last year it was colder than usual and the same is predicted for this winter. The cold here is more of humid cold.
