This is the second black pine I've owned. Unfortunately my first one suffered the end due to the new guy. I am looking for any and advice on how to even out the growth, and get maybe another 6-8" of height.

Probably you will soon hear, "get it off the covered balcony and into the sun!"

Unless you have just potted it. If you just recently potted it up in the terra cotta pot (with what appears to be relatively free draining soil), then slowly introduce more sun over the next 10-14 days and then worry about the "evening out" and "heightening" next year. I would not touch it again this year if just re-potted.

Wisdom of Confusion.

Was the first an Austrian Black pine?

Or is this the first....AND second JBP?

Did you mean 6-8' of height? As in....to add any thickness to the trunk at all?

Or is the
Going to really grow it 6-8" higher....

Than kill it?:p

Playing....

Buy @Brian Van Fleet book on kindle....it's like $8 I think.

Not just an aha moment....
An aha life!

You'll need no more wisdom!

What is your goal in the "short" term for the tree? Do you want to thicken the trunk? Just have a taller tree?

This just needs to grow, in a big pot or in the ground, unrestricted, for YEARS.

Then start worrying about styling, balancing growth, how tall you want it to be...

You could wire some more movement into the lower trunk now as you start to grow it out..

Depending on the size of the tree you eventually want, you will want to cut back periodically and replace the sacrifices you are using to thicken the trunk, this will create taper and movement... but step one is get it somewhere it can expand those roots!

My balcony is in full sun until about 2 pm if that's any better?

As @Eric Group and @Brian Van Fleet said years are required . They know what they're talking about for sure!

Definitely read everything in those links from Brian.

Thickening = time + growth + PATIENCE (the hardest variable)

Unless you live in Texas, JBP need full sun to be at their healthiest. If you live in more northerly climates, full sun may not be enough for that....

... and there are probably JBP in Texas that get direct sun all day long and do just fine.
