I had a fun day of collecting in the mountains today. Got a couple of nice bunjin candidates.
First up is a twin-trunk Douglas Fir. Most of the one trunk is dead, so it will be a large jin.
The reciprocating saw cut through the tap root in about a second, but I still needed the hand saw to prune it back, or the root ball might have shaken apart.
Next is an Englemann Spruce.
There was no large tap root, but several medium sized roots running horizontally in different directions, the largest running opposite the trunk. All I needed was the shovel and shears to get it out.
I think the tree and pack weighed about 50 pounds.
