Of course they have to start from somewhere. But to think you are going to turn 20 dollar garden centre material into 10K trees is perhaps a little naive, to be honest. Or, perhaps I should refrase: I have not come across a lot of trees that had that sort of value, that were grown by the owner within a reasonable amount of time from small material. You are talking in the order of half a centrury normally to create nmaterial that valuable.

But I am keen to learn. So if you could show some of the trees in development, I would love to see them, and learn how you are adding value to them. It sounds like you are quite knowledgeable on the subject, so you probably have a number of trees that are very advanced already. Could you please show us some of your work?

But if you truly want to see an expensive bonsai that has little to no money invested just Google YamaDori and prove yourself wrong .

Guess you are not READING PROPERLY. As I wrote:
200 yrs of mother nature?
However, if you think Yamadori has little to no money invested in them.. Ask anybody collecting yamadori in the right way whether they are free. You might prove yourself wrong..

Appearently not, because I have absolutely no idea what point you are trying to make, besides perhaps that you have no idea where the value in bonsai comes from. That being said, I would love to be shown I am wrong. So please humour me, and show me some progressions of your 20 dollar boxstore plants on their way to 2000$ trees. As asked before:

Or are you going to fess up and tell us they are all one year from the nursery, and you have actually never grown a bonsai ?

ah right. Just found your thread https://bonsainut.com/threads/urban-city-ditch-privet.26036/. Did not know you just started, sorry. I thought you actually knew something we did not and had a way to create valuable trees. Willnot ask again to see these money making projects as the are all less than a year old.
Commonsense really isn't that common Nowadays,, All I have said was these trees have to start from somewhere and I would rather make them myself then purchase someone else's accomplishments .

I have to say I really don't think that it's a old man /old woman hobby.

There are cultural differences between countries. In Japan bonsai is struggling because it is strongly associated with a formal cultural tradition that is not necessarily embraced by younger generations.

However in Europe and the US, and I assume many other parts of the world, bonsai is more closely associated with gardening and love of nature, and doesn't have the strong cultural association. This is one reason why Japanese bonsai masters started accepting European and American students/apprentices - they acknowledge that bonsai is showing stronger growth in parts of the world outside of Japan.

& Mr. Vance really does have beautiful pines
He does.
But also remember that some people have the means to buy good pre bonsai with years of training under their belts.
That's fine too. More power to them I say. I would if I could too.
But since I can't I use regular nursery stock and what I can collect. The one tree I don't is shimpaku. Those come from bonsai people. They're my weakness. I love them.
No matter how you look at it bonsai equals time. You can buy time by being able to purchase trees already half done but it takes money. Time is expensive. Whether it's yours or someone elses.

Interestingly, if you read back you will see this is exactly the point I have been making all along. There is no shortcut and getting to a tree worth 10K takes more time investment than you may think.

Vances' trees are nice, but from a pure commercial value perspective I would be surprised if the would break the 1k mark (But I have never seen them up close).

Anyway, I am out. I have better things to do.
