/EDIT Linking to another image somewhere in BonsaiNut is working for me...

I can see mine but not yours. I can see the picture @Dav4 posted fine.

Ideally, I build a square, run screen across the bottom, and then add bottom slats. The above photo was my first generation, in which I added screens after attaching the bottom slats.

Similar construction was used for my sifters

Ok this is officially a big bug. When I go to edit either of your posts, I see nothing - no link, no image, nothing. When I click on your link, the site prompts me to relog in - even though I am already logged in. However when I DO log back in, I can see the image just fine, and I can now go back to your posts, edit them as the admin, and see the image.

So right now when I edit your post, I see the image of the grow box in my edit window. But when I save changes and go back to the site, I see an image icon with a big red "X" over it.

Bugtastic!

I just took this with my cell phone. Reply to the thread, and hit the "camera" button at the top of the message editing window. It will give you the choice of using a file from your media gallery here on BonsaiNut, or you can chose the option to "upload a file" and it will allow you to snap a pic with your camera and upload it directly into the thread.

Don't forget the media gallery here at BonsaiNut. You can store your photos and have complete control over who can see them, you can turn on or off public viewing and/or commenting, etc.
Nice keyboard. What are the dimensions?

There was someone here who would make grow boxes out of the plastic composite deck boards that could be reused. He would spray them off wipe them down with some bleach and add new screen.

I suppose so, but you can order them, make them or, if you're in a major metro area, you can watch Craigslist and often get them really cheap or, in my case, free for the taking. I currently have five. I might respond to another ad soon, because one or two of them are ready to start falling apart.

The big square one fits a cut down milk crate lined with screen. The white bottom is polymetal with holes and gaps on the edges.

Nothing complex. Attached photos for one of my larger boxes not used yet. This one is 16" x 16" x 5.5".......I mostly use a 12" x 16" x 5.5" or 3.5". Bottoms are the same construction for all of the boxes. I've used these for many years. I would normally use stainless steel screws I have for the bottom slats....however....I have an electric nail gun and about 28,500 nails to use....so...it's more fun right now to twack them in with the nail gun. Eventually I will use screws again once the nailer and nails find a new purpose.

Close ups…

This bottom joint is critical for rigidity and strength. The outer bottom slats are placed all the way out to the edge so each side of the box is anchored in place:

Above, you also see that I have feet to keep the box off the ground. This helps to dry out the bottom of the roots, which decreases rot and improves oxygenation.

Here's a close shot of the inside of my boxes in which I sandwiched the screen between the sides and bottom of the box.

Nice. I'm looking at moving toward a screen bottom with fewer slats than I use now.
What do you use for screen? ...Galvanized 1/8"?....Standard window screen?

@parhamr I like your bottoms, looks nice and strong. The feet are a great idea too, thanks for mentioning them. Now all I need to do is get some screen and lumber.

@Tieball I use "pet proof" window screen from a big box store. It's fiberglass coated in plastic, so that's definitely the most durable part of my boxes.

@GailC heh, bottoms
