This is one of the wysteria from last year
Going to put it in the ground asap
View attachment 136847

Looks good.
I have 1 more just barely poking above soil level today. The window sill with seeds on hit 36c today... Not sure if thats maybe even too hot!

I spoke to a guy from the forum who had some good advice on wisteria. I may try some hardwood cuttings from my tree here.

Wisteria can be propagated by cuttings, hardwood taken late summer or in autumn, when you do so, still keep them outside, the cuttings need a dormancy just like the mature plants, and your winters are mild enough. You can also take root cuttings. If the old vine has any twisty surface roots, harvest a section of root, especially if you can get a few feeder roots with the woody section of root. Pot is up so the one end is above the soil in the pot. Put it in full sun, keep it watered and better than 50% of the time, by the end of summer buds and a new vine will have sprouted.

Seeds in general are fun. I usually try to sprout all mine outdoors. That way they can get full sun. I have done Jack pine, ginkgo, maple, hazelnut, persimmon & a few others. All done outdoors. Too much trouble with damping off indoors.

Indoors, add a fan near the growing area once seedlings are sprouted. Just a cheap fan, have it blow in the general direction of the seedlings. You want enough of a breeze that grassy leaves would wave, but not so much wind that an oak tree would fall over. It will help all your window sill plants health wise, keeps damp off and other rots down. Also helps get air into the soil to the roots and prevents overheating if direct sun hits the plants in the windowsill.

Fans in my light garden are on 24/7/365, you actually need air moving at night as much as in daylight. Night time is when the rots tend to advance.

They are growing nicely. A 6th is just poking through the soil today. Had some great sun today, they are getting nice and green. That biggest one is on its way to its own pot sometime soon.gjeKWPK.jpg xhhwRPo.jpg

Nice!

I pruned a huge Wisteria for a friend at the end of summer last year and then again a few weeks bag, didn't think to grab any of the hundreds of seed pods for some reason!

My single lonely atropurpureum maple seedling which sprouted last spring and made it through the winter has gone now. It had some tiny buds on it but when I inspected it this afternoon I noticed the base of it was black... then it just fell right off so I guess it had got damp and rotten. Bit of a bugger as none of the other 100 or so bloody JM seeds have done anything for a year!

Oh that sucks.. I'm getting quite attached to my seedlings, I'll be rather unhappy if any die lol but I have to expect it may and probably will happen.

I find I've focused so much on inorganic substrate that I feel lost when it comes to watering organic, compost etc. These guys are in just compost and will be repotted in to bigger pots with just compost again. Just worried they will stay too wet.. I have to resist the urge to water more, not till I feel under the soil level is not wet.

Checked my bag of maple seeds in the fridge earlier... nothing still. That's over a year and 2 springs now going through 3 cold stratification cycles and only 1 seed has germinated... then grown for 8 months and promptly died. Shit!

I think maybe a different strategy? Lol

Probably yeah! Might try just a pot outside and see if a more natural cycle works better than a forced one. Most of the seeds are Acer griseum though and apparently the tree only produces about 5-10% viable seeds. Knowing my luck I've got 100 duds.

Unlucky then :/ maybe buy young seedlings, save time and stress.

It'll be a LONG time til they flower mate. If you want a more immediate flowering tree then garden centres sell em for a tenner :) Wisteria formula: Grow on / chop = save a decade.

I'm aware :). 10-14 years for Chinese wisteria, not sure which these are. Probably Chinese though.
They are sitting in 45c sun at the moment, till I opened the window a bit. They are doing well

Conor, you're young, you've got the time. :p:p

Lol yeah.. And I recently learnt the difference in appearance of buds, from the Chinese Wisteria to others... and yes, I certainly have the chinese variety. So.. Flowers... 10-14 years.. Well, lets call that a long term project lol.
They are growing well, seem to have slowed growth now, not growing up or out much.
Reacting to day and night very noticeably, every day

They are still going,
I've weened them to living outside, slowly. Now they are practically outside always apart from cold nights, of temps below 2-3c.

They look a bit worse for wear, discolouring of leaves and to the extent of a few leaves dying.

Do you think this is just reaction to change of climate or something im doing wrong?
Any opinions are appreciated.
