Here in Central MD they are pretty easy to care for, dug a few from a Christmas tree farm a couple of (early) Aprils ago. (Squirt with your garden hose a couple of times a week to keep mites at bay.) Lost interest and sold them.
Problem is that most nursery material is too uniform in shape to be interesting. However the collected specimens are very nice.
Someone mentioned dwarf Picea abies... I've seen 'Little Gem' in Home Depot. These could be fun, they are small and can be wired into various shapes, make a tiny bonsai. Inexpensive fun and this species is sold for bonsai (also used for rock plantings).
