Winter Bonsai 2024, Kannapolis, NC (outside of Charlotte) December 7 & 8, 2024

Just got an update note from Steve Zeisel. There were 68 submissions for 39 exhibit tables, so competition for exhibit tables was fierce. Some good trees will not make the show, but I am pretty certain the overall caliber of the show will improve.

All vending tables have been reserved, and there are 17 vendors on the waitlist.

I wish there was a way that we could locate more space for vendors. The vendor rooms feel tight to me... particularly given the number of vendors they are having to turn away.
Can i ask questions, what is the average number of trees registered in USA bonsai expedition so far? And what the largest number of participants ever recorded?

All of the big shows are juried shows where you have to submit your trees to be accepted for exhibition, and usually the number of trees to be displayed is limited by the size of the venue. This Winter show will have 40 display tables, though each table might consist of a single display, or several trees from the same artist. The National Show has 200 trees. The Pacific Expo had 73 trees in 2022, but I don't know how many this year. I assume around 80.

PBE had 74 trees on display, 60 vendors. They presold 1600 tickets, so I'm guessing they had at least 2000 people come through.

Great show as always. All trees were amazing, but this BC from Rusty Harris is bad ass- maybe the coolest BC you'll ever see. No chop marks, nice knees, wicked branch structure- definitely not the norm. Really missed Mr. Valavanis' sales tables though.

I talked to Rusty and he was a late entrant, having been on a waitlist most of the year. The organizer asked him if he could put a display together Friday night so Rusty was up 'til 2-ish this morning cleaning, collecting moss, mossing, ...and whatever else needed to be done.

My wife and I are driving up tomorrow morning. I hope I didn’t miss all the good stuff today. It’ll be my first show since I’ve only been interested in bonsái since mid summer…
The show ends at 3 pm, usually all the best stuff is gone by noon on Saturday however on Sundays the vendors are usually more willing to cut a deal on anything they have left closer to 3 pm.

When I left today @4pm most of the potters had 40-60% of their inventory left and the tree vendors had 50-70% of inventory. Some of the vendors told me the foot traffic on Saturday hasn't been as consistent as in recent years, hopefully that changes for Sunday because it seemed there were more trees and pots this year than any other year.

Make sure you hit up Mark Comstock in the back left of the tree selling area, he still had quite a few really nice prebonsai for sale. I scooped up a beautiful triple trunk Kashima Japanese Maple from him.
