Exploratory carving. Removing just dead wood to living tissue.

I like your carving so far. I'd think about taking more off the upper trunk to create more taper and maybe some movement

The long branches will be cut short in the summer.

Thanks for the suggestion. I took quite a bit off the upper trunk and got dome decent taper. I also decided to not build any more trunk and kept all the top branches to build the final canopy. Branches were wired out horizontally. I know Crataegus will pop buds to grow upward when a branch is pushed down. When the buds show, I will cut back the long branches.
