    Striped maple for bonsai?

Here is a picture of my first, sadly deceased, pensylvanicum. To give an idea of how slow growing they are, this 1-gal specimen was at least 10 yrs old when I got it. I know this because they don't start producing seed until that age, and this one had some when I got it in fall 2015.

    Striped maple for bonsai?

The yellow leaf pic I think yes, the green one no. The trunk-only pics don't immediately look like pensylvanicum to me, but it's been a while since I've looked closely at mature bark on one! Moosewood are one of my favorite trees in nature, and I've got one myself in a 1 gal nursery container...

    American Bonsai Society Announcement

I don't have a Reddit handle (or even browse that sub very often) , but it seems to me you and the other mods have handled the whole mess rationally and as fairly as possible thus far.

    Crassula ovata rehabilitation

Don't worry about the long internodes, since for ramification you're going to want to cut back to at least a couple of nodes before them!

US Native Deciduous Trees (please share your photos)

Yeah, I know they've got a lot of handicaps as far as bonsai goes (very slow growing, large leaves & internodes, heat and pollution intolerant) and my expectations are set accordingly low, lol. It's a long term experiment with a species that has a lot of sentimental value for me. If I can...

US Native Deciduous Trees (please share your photos)

I love Acer Pensylvanicum, and have long wanted to try one as bonsai. I had one (picture below) but lost it this spring after repotting from a 1 gal nursery container. They have very specific soil requirements that I failed to meet, and I also think that the tree was in a weakened state from a...

How have you or your trees progressed this year? What have you learned?

I've learned that keeping deciduous species alive is not my forte. :( In the last year I lost: two American elms and a horse chestnut that I collected this spring before bud break; a native striped maple that I acquired as nursery stock in fall 2015 and transplanted this spring; a poncirus...

    What's your bonsai "MO"?

LOL, my own MO the last couple of years seems to be being unable to resist pines that I don't really have room for!

Big trees that make you say, "It's like a giant bonsai"

Here are a few from my archive : Near the most northwestern point in the continental US, on the Olympic peninsula in Washington state: A naturally dwarfed birch grove on the top of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, Maine: And some pitch pines in the Albany Pinebush Preserve in NY...

My fukien tea now has new growth but suddenly the leaves look limp

Hard to say without a photo, but my fukien tea always has new growth get wilted when the soil gets really dry. In my experience, overwatering seems to result in yellowing & dropping of leaves.

    Natal plum propagation

Hi there! I've successfully rooted Natal plum cuttings in a glass of water - - - of course transferring them to pots once the roots get a couple inches long. :) Laura
