    Hornbeam tree identification

Hornbeam bark tends to be less brown and more gray. Also, I've never seen a hornbeam, even this young, with so many bud scars along the trunk. I'm fairly sure that this plant isn't Carpinus caroliniana.

Japanese white pine Miyajima nursery stock.

If you're interested in grafting down low, I'd suggest ordering bulk seedlings. You'll find that the diameter of the trunk down in/on the root tissue is more likely to match the diameter of the scion. I've ordered from Musser Forests in 25 and 50 seedling lots. Was going to order jbp this...

    Japonicus' Japanese White Pine

Forgive me, as I'm in the bottom of a pint of vodka, but what ratios are you using?

    Japonicus' Japanese White Pine

One of the things that makes this thread significant and remarkable to me is the fact that you don't use Akadama/Pumice/Lava. The mycorrhiza in that root ball is serious.

    Nursery stock progression Juniper #14

I love what you did with the trunk. I'm not whining, but I'm surprised at little imagination I have when designing my own trunks: I aways seem to make S-curves.

What soil type for growing in ground?

Brent Walston had an interesting experience with soilless ground growing. Cost would be prohibitive, and some species may not like it: https://www.evergreengardenworks.com/growfast.htm

    Making chopsticks

About 10 years ago, Mike Hagedorn invited me to email Ryan a question about Ryan's repotting methods. I'm sure at the time, Ryan was very busy working his ass off and struggling to gain his footing as a businessman. Without asking me to compensate him for his time and expertise, he emailed...

    Making chopsticks

This is my impression of what I might hear if I were to listen to this video: It's important to facilitate the exploration of all the nuances of chopstick creation methodology. Chop-sticking and chopstick creation is at the meeting and confluence of both horticultural and aesthetic...

Cone 6 Body W/ Low Warping & Water Absorption

I've been making slab built bonsai pots for a while. One of my biggest issues is dealing with warping. I now use Laguna #75. I chose it because of its low water absorption and color. 1. Can anyone suggest a cone 6 clay body with very low warping and less than 2% water absorption? 2...

    Failed airlayer

I've also had a devil of a time getting tridents to air layer. They don't bridge or die. They just swell like crazy, build up huge callous tissue, and sit there.

    Functionality of Nanban Without Feet

Indeed - "superficial" I had no idea that nanban pots could look like this. Super interesting. By the way, I absolutely love your work.

Holy cow! Thank you so much for this informative post!

    Functionality of Nanban Without Feet

I don't hate the glib answers; they're cute, but I'm considering making some nanban-style pots either on the wheel or with coils, and I'm not quite sure if I should add feet.

    Functionality of Nanban Without Feet

Are nanban pots supposed to have feet? Do nanaban pots without feet sometimes have drainage issues?
