The beauty of akadama is it changes color from wet to dry, when turns from brown/wet to tan/dry on the surface, simply dig down a bit (1/2'-3/4' or 1-2 cm) with your finger and if its still brown your fine
to skip watering, if its tan water away.
Attmos, using properly annealed copper wire is almost like wrapping cooked spaghetti around the branches/trunks.
Residential copper wire is immensely harder and nearly impossible to apply without damaging the bark.
Also you state 10 gauge is really easy, 12 gauge gets a little tougher...

I used to just shake the pipe handles back and forth
Added the springs at the bottom of the pipes, and a plate with pins welded on to capture the springs

I've annealed a fair amount of construction site castoff wire, mostly in an outdoor fire, pull out when just glowing red, toss in cold water.
Also used a barbecue but it seems a little harder to get it hot enough. didn't turn out as soft as I'm used to.

Ideally you want to remove as few feeder roots as possible with ponderosa, You'll just have to wait until repotting time to see if the large anchor root
can be reduced without losing many feeder roots, it may take a few cycles of chasing the roots back to achieve the pot size you are looking...
