Bonsai Pots - Glazed vs. UnGlazed

Does anyone know if glazed pots present any advantage over unglazed pots or vice versa?

    Watering A Repotted Maple

Given my root mass block of wood reference, until your response, I was a bit embarrassed to admit that in my frustration, I did break out a saw and cut the root mass block of wood in half, however I did not cut enough for tree to fit nicely in the pot. I now have four Chinese Elms to do. I...

    Watering A Repotted Maple

Thanks for the responses. I will add the grated sphagnum moss. I pruned the root mass as much as I thought possibly could without killing the trees. As a novice, perhaps the veterans here have experienced this but on one of trees as I got closer to the base of tree the entangled roots were...

    Watering A Repotted Maple

So I repotted two maples (one pic is attached) into bonsai pots and this is my first time ever doing so. My question is the soil medium level is convex to the top of the pot and while I've seen more than one like this on the boards, how the heck do you water the tree and not wash away the soil...

    Japanese Black Pines Root Pruning?

I have these JBP and I sprouted them last year and they need a lot more growing. But I am wondering, at some they'll need to be root pruned, correct? I've done some searching and found nothing definitive in this regard. If root pruned, when do you do it? I get it with deciduous trees...

Chinese Elms, Repotting and Trunk Chop

I'll try that. I'll chop the Elms tomorrow and I will be doing the Maples Monday or Tuesday. Historically the Elms are a week to two weeks behind the Maples in terms of swelling buds. The Maples are presenting a little green at the swelling buds right now. Here in Maryland the winter hasn't...

Chinese Elms, Repotting and Trunk Chop

Can a Chinese Elm tolerate a repot and trunk chop at the same time? I am guessing they are as hardy as an Amur Maple????

    Pruning An Amur Maple

Thanks for the response (Shibui). I was concerned about just how much I could take off the top. Now planning to remove about half of the top and likely about 50% of the root mass.

    Pruning An Amur Maple

So this is a follow-up to my 2022 inquiry. I root pruned these two Maples 2 years ago and now I'd like to root prune them again and place them in a bonsai pot. My concern is they will be quite top heavy. To that end, can I do limited limb pruning at the time of root pruning? If not, just root...

    JBP Winter Care

Any response will be appreciated.... 5 or 6 months ago I sprouted these from seed and they seem to have grown okay so far. My question is unlike my Maples and Chinese Elms which I simply place them out of the wind they sit outside all winter. Should the JBPs be treated differently? Thanks
