I'm jealous of your Raintree. I really love the flat top and ever since I've seen yours I toss around the idea of doing it to mine. I'm in texas too. Do you use any organics in the soil for moisture retention?

Had to put my Maple in my car during the cold weather. I live in an apartment and I don't have a garage. It might have been alright, but I didn't want to risk it.

It is getting direct sun from about 3pm to maybe 6 or 7.

Maybe I will take it out the direct sun for a while and see how that goes it seems cooler outside and the sun doesn't seem as hot as compared to earlier in the summer but you do make a good point.

Whoa that IS weird. Interesting. Could it be that some seed landed in a crevice of the trunk or root system and sprouted in there? Seems unlikely though.

I guess I should clarify that I was using the superThrive just as a feeding regimen not as a fix to a problem. I do see what you mean though. Someone once told me that it's a good idea to use superthrive on your bonsai so that is the only reason I have been using it. I will do some research on...

This is a good point. I will research other ways for the future. A little bud opened up over night. First growth I've seen since I brought it home so that was reassuring. I've been watering with Superthrive lately. Should I be fertilizing this maple right now?
