Trident maple (to air layer or not)

I acquired this trident maple with full foliage this spring. Once I was able to remove the fall foliage and took a better look. My choices, as I see it, are to leave it as is and do some grafts lower on the trunk or air layer the top and then chop lower on the trunk to start fresh with the...

    Collected Pieris Japonica

Unfortunately it did not make it. It was a slow decline over that summer and did not make the overwintering in the unheated garage.

A honeysuckle needs a drastic remodel

It just has this appearance of splaying out that seems unappealing. What are your reasons for keeping all three?

A honeysuckle needs a drastic remodel

I’ve had this honeysuckle for about 5 years and I’ve been putting off doing much with it. I am planning a repot this spring and I’m going to pot it up in a larger pot. I’m also thinking of eliminating the left side trunk, shortening the far right trunk, and changing the planting angle forward a...

Is there anything to be done with this mugo pine?

I like that! It’s a bit wild, but has possibilities. I’m sure if I removed some of the branches it might allow for even more back budding.

Is there anything to be done with this mugo pine?

A few years back I scooped up this mugo pine someone had dug up and put out for the garbage. I’ve brought it back to good health, and along the way I’ve tried to imagine what could be done with it. I’m thinking it would have to be turned on it’s side, but nothing else comes to me. I thought I...

Should I dig it up and pot it?

I would also add that the kinds of questions you are asking are indicative of someone very early in the practice/love of bonsai... I get the urge/itch/desire to dig something up and get cracking away, because I’ve been there... heck, I still have to leash myself from responding to ads on...

Should I dig it up and pot it?

Consider working on the pine while it remains in the ground if you want practice... clean it up, practice grafting of foliage.. practice with it in the ground and stable allows for the healthiest and strongest tree and more likely success.., having said that, research timing of all procedures...

    Juniper Progress

Being in the south means you are already experiencing some heat, right? I would wait until late winter, early spring of next year... I recently did work on this type of juniper, but I live in PA and temps are still fairly cool (65-75) most days... wet and humid too, which helps with aftercare...

    Juniper Progress

It looks ‘grey owl’ juniper-ish to me... I think you have some good rough material to whip into shape over the coming years... the advice already given about defining pads is spot on... but with this variety, the pads will ‘never’ have the ‘tight’ tidy look of other junipers, but that isn’t the...

    A Weird Taxus

What about something in between? Maybe strategically wire some branches out of the way to open up the interior? Cut back some that you believe you would never use in the end?

I'm Calling it a Grey Owl for Now... 1st Repot

Is that sort of ‘picking ‘ a strand and then pealing? Then what do you do with the frayed pieces that are left?
