I haven't tried - but my guess is no. I see these in sandy loam and gravel on rock out-cropping's in Monterey, and on the cliffs in Santa Cruz, CA. I haven't seen or heard of them growing in standing water.
APRIL 2023
FRONT AND BACK
IT APPEARS THE PEST CONTROL IS WORKING, THE TREE IS STILL HEALTHLY TODAY (AUG 29, 2024). AIMING TO REPORT LATE FALL OR EARLY WINTER.
Yes! it mounds and then elongates like shimpaku - the foliage is not as compact, but there is a resemblance for sure! strong sun exposure produces gold/yellow color. Semi shade and it tends to stay green, but doesn't grow as dense.
JUNE 2023 - SPRING CANDLES WERE A BIT WEAKER THAN I HOPED FOR. MY OBERSVATIONS IS THAT JBP DECANDEL APPROACH NEEDS TO BE AMENDED FOR THIS SPECIES. I'M POSTING THIS ON AUG 29, 2024, AND MY OBSERVATIONS ARE THAT THE TREE HAD A WEAK RESPONSE TO DECANDLING IN JUNE 2022 AND JUNE 2024. I WILL TRY...
Basically by following the JBP decandling technique: decandle around Father's day, thin to 2 shoots early fall, needle pluck to balance energy. repeat. Ramification really helps.
