I watched a few videos and everyone that has had success has used fresh seeds that they harvested themselves. Also where do you guys get your seeds?

I ordered some from Sheffield's Seed Co. They have a large selection.

Well that's no good. I hope I will have better luck. This fall I'm going shopping for some seeds in the parking lots around town. Already been scouting them out.

I've bought seed from them = an extremely rare maple. They state on their web site that this seed has an 38% germination rate; I got a bit less.

I strongly suggest that you follow Deno's advice. You can find his book and two supplements in the BNut Resources.

I still have a bunch of JM seed from last fall. Roughly 90 days in the fridge until you start seeing tap roots emerge then sow them under 1/4" of substrate.

PM me if you're interested.

I bought from sheffield's the last two years. I order the seed when it shows up in the new arrivals ares. Even in this case it is dried. However I just follow their stratification requirements. I have cold stratified in the fridge or just over winter in the garage.

I evidently got scammed by treeseeds.com, placed an order 4/26, with no communication since payment and a refusal to issue refund (or even reply to several messages). I'm young and think I'm pretty security savvy but I wanted the seeds so I made an exception to my "PayPal only" rule and got burnt using Zelle.

Tree seed man on etsy sent me good seeds, rare exotic seeds in Canada has too. I hear a lot about sheffields and Schumacher (sp?)

I got scammed by treeseeds.com too. $2 for 50 JBP seeds. Too good to be true 😢

Dang, sorry to hear that.
I'm going to notify my bank tomorrow and report him to the ic3.gov system.
There's another thread here concerning treeseeds.com , I had to get my credit card to refund me due to the same circumstances you mentioned

I have had great experiences with Sheffield's in the past, but this season was almost a total bust for JM seeds. Something like 1 for 40.

The cedar elms from there did great, though, and now I have dozens.

I had decent germination rates with my Japanese Red Pine seeds from Sheffields but the maple seeds were trash…

Back in 2020 I got a bunch of Japanese black pine seeds from Clark M Long and I think every single seed germinated!

Ordered 25 JM seeds for $3 and promptly received 41. Soaked them, put in fridge for 70 days. Zero germination.

growing from seed is not always easy. One must follow the stratification procedure correctly. If maple seed drops below a certain percentage moisture while in storage, a 60 day warm moist stratification will be needed BEFORE the 90 day cold moist stratification. So too many days dry in an envelope on your desk can change the way the seed needs to be treated. I don't remember the exact moisture content where the requirements change, I read it once in a book on germinating trees from seed, not related to bonsai.

Fresh seed needs only a cold stratification, seed that has been dried, needs a 60 day warm (above 60 F or 16 C) stratification followed by a 90 day cold moist stratification (between 32 to 40 F or 0 C to 4 C)
