Of my three entries 1 died due to the storm (the shrubby buttonweed) and the rosemary and elm are doing ok as of now.

I don't have them w/ me they are being tree sat by a friend in Florida. I'll be driving down there to pick them up along with some other trees I left behind with him sometime in March.

Won't lie I feel odd not having my entries with me and almost feel ike I'm DQ'd

No work has been done to them other than keeping them alive since last summer. Can't wait to get them back!!!!

Serissa doing well. Might try and wire it some this winter.
Willow Leaf is again leafless, altho it has some new leaves poking out, they aren't doing much. Near death again. I think I was overwatering so I have been treating it more like a succulent lately, as I read they respond well to that. Shrug...IMG_20180102_082209174.jpg IMG_20180102_082401070.jpg

I know, it was hard but I had no choice. I couldn't bring all of them up. The truck and car were completely full. He is good with horticulture so I felt it was best. I'm still worried though and can't wait to get them here again. Few more months. I miss them.

The day of packing up and leaving I swear I spent a good chunk of time pacing and trying to figure what was best to do with the trees.

All of mine are sleeping. The only one that has me concerned is my mugo pine. I worked the roots harder than my better judgment told me I should have. The true test will be if it wakes up in the spring.

The other two, my pitch pine and American hornbeam, I have no concerns with. Both will be hit hard this spring to get them into small pots. I still need to find one for the hornbeam. I have one for the pitch pine but I may change my mind.

My three entries are somewhere under that 3 foot pile of snow. I might see them again in March. Hope they are cozy!View attachment 173602
Dumped snow on my trees in the greenhouse...but, the mame contest one...got watered. The substrate isn't frozen...But it's so small...I just couldn't pile snow on it. It's being pampered until Spring's repot. CAN NOT WAIT!!! :D:cool:

Is it too late to enter the contest or is there another one coming up soon? :)

Looks like this thread is now mostly just mame discussion at this point.

The deadline to join is over...sorry. As to any others. I know a grow from seed contest is underway...in the contest forum. As to that deadline...I am unsure. I don't follow that contest...with not not participating. Best bet would to head on over to the contest forum...

I repotted my entry into this contest, and unfortunately, I think it's too big for mame. It's also going to take some root grafts on the front side due to a complete lack of root. Sorry I didn't use anything for scale, but the nebari (not including roots) is 4 inches wide.

It's a shame it can't be in the contest, but a 4 inch base is a nice problem to have! Beautiful tree :)

Well...this happened...when repotting the mame contest tree.

Untangling the root that was a knee root. Lots if fine feeder roots.

In doing so...my fancy dancy curving branch broke off the contest tree. Tossed in soil it came from that has slightly mix of potting soil and bonsai substrate. But if it doesn't root...no biggie.

So now...my contest tree is taking on another direction. But one I think...will still work.

No photos of my contest tree yet. It's not nice out...to do so.

Question...now that my contest tree is in a mame pot...waking up. Setting it into a larger pot will help it retain moisture. @Dav4 I know you did this with that goji of yours...do you oil the pot to help condition it so it cleans up easier when you take it out eventually? My contest tree is a nice pot from Japan. So...yeah. Concerned of Stains from being in the other pot. Assuming 1/2" into substrate to keep moisture of the larger pot. Am I on the right thought process?

No oiling... just set it on top of a larger pot. I'll admit I probably don't oil my pots enough, but I wouldn't necessarily have to oil a pot prior to sitting it in another pot of soil as it'll clean up just fine either way.

Just set on top...but assuming the drain hole is touching surface of substrate below...yes? Going to do this tomorrow. Thanks Dave!

Maybe untill it gets realy warm its enough for now if you could put a layer of spaghmum moss on the top of the pot?
At least thats what i do with smaller pots also i add alitle more organic trough my mix to keep it moist longer trough warm dry periods

Good idea...I can do that too. Thanks! Tiny pot looks incredibly small next to other bonsai before it.
Its to get into the teens today. But...long weeks of warm temps. Has me repotting some. So glad I have the ability to keep the greenhouse comfortable for it. Above freezing.
Goji is just starting to show signs of waking. Its the one I pulled out of the contest.
