You will kick yourself in the rear for not doing it sooner.

Thanks fellas! Kept me from questioning much!

Except how I was going to turn my X-mas BP gift card into tree money...
But that worked!

I wasn't going to leave The Hidden Gardens empty handed again!

An appropriate "back"! Booty!

A pretty nice spread is why I picked this one. That front branch will be the new trunkline, some useable branching on it. Tall slender joint.

20170304_205750.jpg
I should be able to uncross these couple, pulled one other high root off, I think this one will come off in time too.

20170304_205714.jpg
The top branch here is the one I see as my New trunk.
@Woody Carverton do you think I can honey up those other branches, or would it be feasible to layer them?

So....

I know the only reason my Mugo is alive is because I have Vance "coaching" me.

So I'm looking for any and all passionate Shimpaku coaches to help me keep this thing alive!

Thanks!

My shimpaku notes…
  • Yellowing foliage = too much water
  • Brown is too little and probably too late
  • The winter color can be a bunch of lies and terror; they can look sad!
  • Tiny white scale bugs can infest the needles
  • Leaving some healthy growth tips is generally good (apparently they provide around 60–80 percent of the total energy); a hard pinch to everything is risky
  • If a shari is shrinking then that's an excellent sign of vigor and generally a green light to be aggressive in the next styling
  • Repot between April and July, depending on weather, climate, and health (once every 2–5 years?)
  • They love pumice

I was eyeing that one today, but swore off of conifers until I get back into the swing of things with some maples.

Nice meeting your son and you today.

Pretty cool!
It likes full sun all day long.
Where you live that won't be too hot for it.
Also I had mine in pure 8822 and they did alright but last year when I added lava they started looking and growing better.

I'd go half bare root to be on the safe side.
You haven't had the best luck with junipers so it's best to take it easy.

I was telling Chi and Casah I was gonna kill it by spring.

But I already have received enough info to balance my urges and it's life!

I only cleaned up the....."duff" and dead roots off the top, and only removed , what was very little brown.

I need to know about the bark...

Should or can the peely come off?

The saying goes, peel it if the bark is red, let it stay flaky if the bark is brown. Most tosho bark is brown, and the rougher texture goes well with the needle foliage. I don't bother peeling the red bark on my shimpaku until I'm getting ready to show them, or do some wiring and it's in the way. Then, you can go dolphin smooth.

This thread is a pretty good documentary on developing rough stock into a finished bonsai. Resist the instinct to clean out the interior growth and leave the stuff out on the ends. Do the opposite; cut off foliage from the tips, and make Jins from the bare branches. Bend big branches by dislocating them from the trunk union, and give lots of movement to the thin shoots using wire. Give it some battle scars, then let it grow like crazy for a few months. Shimps are my favorite material. Have fun!

@sorce it is repot season for us! Or maybe wait a week or two if you don't have a green house. I'm a bit precautions and repot one year. Then waited an entire year before styling. I did trim foliage because I had a lot of elongated shoots.

I was just peeping the extended and we're not supposed to get below 30 again, 4/12 being the last below freeze day.

March 12th is the full moon, so I'm going to repot some that need repotting between then and the 20th.

Then not again until April 12th ish.

I am a firm believer in the waning moon.

Couple sprayed mites but it's growing!

Pretty straight forward future.

Couple branches at that first spot gotta come off, save that small right one.

And one of 2 apex splits gotta go.
They both have +'s and -'s.

But I could Probly get that all off safe next year if all goes well....
And then, "prep work" will be done...

So I can start pinching the hell out of it!

Haha @sorce no way! I picked up a shimpaku this year too and it was that exact same quote that made me do it(Vance's). I'm glad you started this thread because juniper is not my forte.

I repotted my junis already. Father's day may be a bit late as your Shimpaku should be pushing some elongated growth?

Vance been successful in "summer".
I've read they do em last in Japan.
But some people do em here earlier.

Vance is my "climate master".

No greenhouse...no spring....same same!

I realized the other day...
That almost Everyone else's instructions come with the missing disclaimer...

"Greenhoused...protected....babied..."

Or they are further south.

This is huge IMO...

Everywhere you buy...get instructed, learn from....
Babied trees.

I can't roll like that...
Does that make Me square?
Lol!
