I know this may seem like a dumb question to many but does anyone know if larch is a good species as bonsai in the Chicago area. I think it would be okay in winter but we can get steamy in summer.

If you are talking about Larix laricina, they will do well in your area, after all they are native there. http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=LALA

I see it is a threatened species in your state, so collecting is out, but there are plenty of sources for larch. You'll enjoy working with this species.

V Dub what Will said, they are some of the ( I said some) best stuff we have in the US. For us Northerners anyway.

Not sure what your budget is but Brussels has a really nice one $175.00

I have seen it when I was there, the picture does not do it justice. (my budget does not allow a tree of that price)
I did purchase a couple larch seedlings last year and they are doing good here in zone 8.

Have A Great Day!

Actually the Golden Larch at Brussels isn't a real Larch and definitely won't do well outside in Chicago winters. The curse of common names...:)
