1 Sorce! 8 Nanas! 7 Depots!

So I lied. Its 8. And a Sargents from spring.

I want to just put these up so you know what I look for in practice material.
It does take many stores and many trees.
I wanted to work all these, but I restrained myself after the YUP NaNa, and the multitrunk, only cutting some others, and applying a little wire to some like the question mark NaNa.

So they are all in different stages of training.


It doesn't really matter, but from top and left to right, I'll post a bit of each with a close up. Except the YUP NaNa bottom right. Oops!



I felt the base on this, made me get it. Nanas didn't show up till fall. I gave this a go to cure the spring itch. Shouldn't have, base isn't that great! But I learned from it.


A nice base and 3 perfectly placed small branches (one back) made me buy this. The thick left high one can be utilized if the bottoms catch up. The top right has to come off. If I can get a decent new leader in those tiny ones at the top, this can be a great mame formal upright. Better taper at a different angle.



Great base, quick nice taper, some adequate low branches, and a nice apexable branch made me get this.

This one I bought for the S curve! It really juts back and forth neat. A little reverse taper at the first branch, mostly because of it trying to grow roots there, where the soil used to go to. Should be fixable now.
This is the yellower one. It has greened up some and is growing.

I bought 6 in pairs of 2, and 2 separate.

This one has Pimp movement. Usable low branches, and options. It was only chopped to fit space.



This one has strong high branches, but when I felt that one curved under, I thought I'd hack the shit out of it, raffia and twisty up, but I found it rooted itself there in the dirt again. Don't wanna mess with it till repot.
It also has good upright options.
Or I may plant it rooted twice if I can do it interestingly. Rock maybe?



Quick easy taper and nice movement of I can find the right angle made me buy the ? NaNa. It has a thread. So does the YUP NaNa!


And the other I wired out. I got it cuz the 3 trunks played interesting together, and I wanted to see what I could do with 3 trunks.

And they are sized perfectly different.

All of my junipers from last year are DEAD. I hope these fare better!

Don't mistake good for easy. Shimpaku Junipers are far easier to care for and transform into bonsai than any Procumbens of any sub-species. If you can get your hands on some Shimpaku Junipers you ought to do it. You will kick yourself in the rear for not doing it sooner. By the way; they grow quire well from cuttings.

I have always associated it with grafting or grafted(which I don't care for).

If I could get a larger cutting straight no graft, I Probly would!

Everything Vance said is so true. Shimpaku juniper is one tough customer. And once you get one you want them all. I don't hardly look at any other junipers in nurseries anymore.
You can't get shimpaku from regular nurseries is the only drawback.
I used to love procumbens. I liked parsons. Now all I want is shimpaku. Got a shimpaku fund going right now. Saving for another 2 to 3 inch trunk again. They are addicting.
Just like the damn pines I've become enamored with because of Vance!

I got my last one from Martha at Meehans. The next one may come from there but I saw a nice one this summer at a vendor table at the show I went to. They're out there you just need to keep your eyes peeled.
I'll have to start a thread on mine. I have pictures but I had at it this summer and it's looking a little tore up. The ugly duckling stage I call it. A couple years and it will be a swan.
And Rupert. He has been out with me at my trees every day he now thinks they are his. I've been worrying about theft here. I've had people ask how much the trees are worth. I keep them in the yard in the open not fenced in. But at the same time they ask is that a German Shepherd. Or he looks like a cop,are you training him to attack? I tell them that isn't necessary. If anyone crosses his imaginary line it's on. That's what they do. Nothing like a German Shepherd for home security.
There is a saying. "Sure I have a gun. I'll shoot you if you get past my Shepherd. To put you out of your misery!"

Those turned out pretty good. Good starts. I've seen people get mature foliage on those. Then again I've seen people talk about how they're like San Jose junipers where they just keep throwing needle foliage with bits of scale foliage.

I've wanted to pick up some of these one gallons, but I haven't seen any procumbens nanas around here this year. It's been a weird year for material. Walmart didn't even have any S curved ficus microcarpa that I usually pick up to play with.

The shimpaku foliage is a pleasure to work with and is sought after for its very soft, smooth foliage. I have a couple very large ones that are growing out. If you can get your hands on some mature san jose they are great for grafting shimpaku foliage. The san jose are known for growing very nice trunks and relativity fast grower. I like all junipers though those guys are tough. Alsp im pretty sure the depot junipers come from brussells nursery. You could just buy direct and get them alot cheaper .I'm a juniper junkie.

Here the hardware stores are just now getting their fall shipments of trees shrubs this is the time of year when you can get those little junipers here.

The junipers don't really do it for me. I want to collect a native one, iM growing out a little shimpaku and one of those procumbens. Might try j. Rigida some time.

The Sargrnts, And the yellow one, stay in The back there, up on the window cut out, 4 on a front sill, and 2 down in The front window well.

The will all go in the front window well for winter, I gotta put something down to keep their feet out of water, they have a 2 ft parapet wall for wind.

It would be quite a drive for you Sorce, but I found some great Pre-Bonsai Shimpaku at Dragon Tree Bonsai in Florida yesterday. He had all sizes. Prices started at $15 for trees a little larger than the ones you posted up to $25 and $30 for some pretty nice ones (didn't measure the trunks). I didn't ask the prices on the larger ones, I couldn't have gotten it in the car anyway. The owner (Robert Pinder) said he sells to plant city and other nurseries. I wound up with a $25 one in my trunk when we pulled out It's now setting on the balcony at the hotel for a week.

Trunk at first branch was just under an inch, towards the base it got almost 2" so I suppose that's more of the nebari.
