    A Japanese Black Pine

Thanks for sharing, Scott. RIP Jim. He definitely left a mark on bonsai in the U.S. We miss his knowledge, skill, and humor at REBS for sure.

Planning on building a 8x3 ft forest

Very cool. Talented guy for sure. I can't imagine what repotting that thing would be like, though. 😳 Thanks for sharing, Danny

    An article about Mr. Maple

Cool article. Interesting there's no mention of Japanese Maples as bonsai 🤔

    Rudd’s California Juniper #1

It's a really nice tree. You've done really well with it, and it's developed nicely. I think I'd like to see different heights on each of the three trunks. Have you considered reducing the heights of the left and right trunks? Having them at roughly all at the same height (including the deadwood...

    Lone Pine Gardens in Sebastopol

Lone Pine is the bomb. 💣 I feel lucky to have them in my backyard (cheesy pun intended).

I made this pot for my Japanese Red Pine

Very nice work on that pot. The lines look perfect 👌

Japanese Black Pine - Branch selection

I would cut them now, but leave a stub. You can remove the rest in November. No reason to airlayer.

    Projects in the Misfit Backyard

Yes. This may be. I have had quite a bit of success with thread grafting. I've done both branches and quite a few roots on a Trident Maple of mine. Thread grafts are quite easily done. I have less experience and, therefore, less success with approach grafts. The drawback with thread grafts is...

    Projects in the Misfit Backyard

I potted it up in a small colander in APL with coco coir added for moisture retention. I wired up the grafts with the possibility that I end up keeping some or all of them. Who knows? It might be a kobudachi thing at some point.

    Projects in the Misfit Backyard

I initially just thought to nick the callous, dust some root hormone on it, and hope roots sprout. After some thought, I decided to thread graft some roots on it. These will improve the nebari and hopefully prevent that side of the layer from dying. Also, the aerial portions will serve as...

    Projects in the Misfit Backyard

I airlayered a branch off of the large JM in my yard last year. I inspected the roots today and found that there's a whole side of the layer that didn't form roots.

Sapling Division: Misfit's Japanese Maple Forest

I added eight small trees to the forest at a workshop with Adam Toth a couple weeks ago. I had only planned on adding like three trees or so, but he thought more were needed. This brings the number from ten to eighteen. It's still an even number. Maybe I need to add one more at some point to...

    Nate's JBP Projects

I would have left the candle on that apical leader. That is what you let run to thicken the base. This is if you are intending to grow a shohin or even larger tree at this stage. That should be your sacrifice. You let it grow until the base is getting to be the size you want, and then you cut it...

    7 yo sapling JBP

There should be some kind of award for keeping a JBP alive indoors for seven years. 🏆

    The why of root work

Root work is done for multiple reasons. Firstly, we repot to improve the soil substrate. Many times trees come in less than ideal soil. We change the soil out with better draining soil to keep the roots healthy and avoid root rot. Secondly, we trim the roots to improve the nebari, or surface...

    First post (almost)

Welcome to the forum, Dave! Bonsai is a terrific hobby that can provide a lifetime of enjoyment. This forum is great and there are many members on here with loads of experience. Many members on here are willing to share their experience and knowledge freely, which is great. There are, however...

    The 2010 Bonsainut Maple Project

I like this idea as well. I have a few Tridents in the ground that I've been growing for a few years now. Long term threads are extremely valuable IMO. Although, it looks like @Brian Van Fleet is the only member that was involved in the first iteration of this that still exists on the forum.

    Failed airlayer

This is a great solution. I think I'd probably leave it attached to the parent until next spring to allow those grafts to get really strong before separating.

    Air layering maple between nodes?

I wonder if this has to do with auxin concentrations near the nodes. They may be more concentrated as this would signal for shoot elongation. When you cut the cambium right at the node, those auxin concentrations would be devoted to root development. With the addition of synthetic auxin...

    Air layering maple between nodes?

You don't need a node to air layer. Nodes are where new shoots/leaves emerge. The roots from an air layer are going to be rising from the cambium/phloem

    Air layering in Tyler,Tx area.

I've typically set air layers after spring growth has hardened off a bit in late spring. I have heard of people doing it at bud break in early spring/late winter with success also. I don't know which is best. Hopefully someone with experience doing both will chime in with which is best. I'm...

    Yamadori Style Junipers

Yup. Probably at least 10 years. Kishus seem to trunk up really slowly. It also doesn't seem to matter if they're in the ground or in a pot, the rate is about the same. In a pot, at least you can easily wire and do deadwood work.
