    Early Xmas Present to Myself

I had tried placing like 20+ grafts on this Juniper in February of 2024. We'll, not a single one of them survived 🤦‍♂️. This year, I really wanted to get this tree moving in the direction I envisioned. I couldn't risk wasting another year with failed grafts, so I had Peter Tea do the grafting...

    Broom style elm

I agree with you about the link of a link thing. We can go down rabbit holes on the internet and can find virtually any talking point that agrees with and supports our own. The conspiracy theory crowd has proven this point to a tee. As far as the broom with a central leader thing is concerned...

    Broom style elm

It's linked on the page that BWayneF shared previously. An account of someone who visited Kimura's garden https://www.ausbonsai.com.au/blog/Watto/?p=178

    Broom style elm

Looks like Kimura calls this tree a broom that seems to have a central leader. I think I'll take his word for it

    Broom style elm

Looks like a broom style in the making to me, an informal one at the very least. I think we sometimes get too caught up in the rules and nomenclature. FWIW I appreciate you not naming this thread "The Chinese Elm". I think that is pretty arrogant regardless of how nice your tree is or what it's...

NPR Segment on National Bonsai Museum Yamaki Pine

Pretty cool to hear a bonsai story on NPR. Happy 400th Birthday, Yamaki Pine! https://www.npr.org/2025/05/19/nx-s1-5383306/bonsai-survived-hiroshima-bombing-anniversary

Itoigawa Shimpaku - best materials for future shohin project?

I agree. If your goal is to make shohin, I'd get the small ones and put some tight bends in them. Yes, they will take longer to achieve a size that makes a nice bonsai, but they will have the character that makes them more desirable.

    Lego Bonsai

Oh, man! I finally got the OG one this last Xmas. Damn you, Lego!! Now I'm gonna have to buy this one now.

Picked up a copy of Jonas' book. It's excellent!

    New Trident

We learn something with whichever course we take in this hobby. There's nothing wrong with being conservative.

    New Trident

I would have been more aggressive with the chop on that left-hand trunk and the roots (and also buried them deeper). I get it, though. It sounds like you're relatively new to this and you just bought the thing... You don't want to kill it straight away. This more conservative approach should...

    @Bonsai Nut origin story

Great thread idea. I've been on BNut since 2010 (some years more than others), but I've always appreciated that we have this virtual platform to share our love of all things bonsai. There have been other forums that have come and gone over the years, but BonsaiNut seems to be in it for the...

Looks amazing, Dave. Love the new pot. It pairs so well with those emerging leaves. Well done 👏

Is there a proper time to whack a Pinus?

I usually whack my pinus when nobody is around, but... Are you talking about cutting down the leader? That is what thickens the trunk, so it really depends on whether you're happy with the size. I usually do hard pruning on pines late in the year when the sap flow has slowed down. If you're...

What did you do today? Show us Pic Required

Workshop with Adam Toth. I brought my new Japanese Maple ROR that I bought from Lotus. I had intended to just go over the tree with Adam and figure out the plan. He looked at it and noticed that the soil it was in wasn't good and said, "Let's repot.". I was very hesitant as I've always been told...

cheap but but large training pots

I second this. Anderson flats are great for bonsai in development. If you set them on tge ground, the tree can easily escape into the ground for faster growth. I allow this to happen and then sever them yearly to make sure they don't grow too fast...

Damn. That's a bummer, Danny. I liked that tree a lot. Losing trees never gets easier.

    Arakawa Japanese Maple

Making this into two separate, single trunk trees would take away one of the reasons this tree is so phenomenal. IMHO, single trunk trees, unless they have some unique defining feature (branch, unusual base, deadwood, ROR, exposed roots etc), can be rather boring and cookie cutter. Multiple...

    Some trident seedling

What is the purpose of this graft? It looks like it's placed too far out from the trunk to improve the base. Also, it seems to be in a spot where there is a bulge in the root. A graft in this location seems like it would only make it worse. Maybe the picture is deceptive

What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

Picked up a Kiyohime root over rock from Scott Chad at Lotus Bonsai this morning. I had first seen it back in January when I first visited the nursery. I saw it again in February at the Shohin Seminar in Santa Nella. I liked the tree, but still wasn't sure on pulling the trigger. Glad I finally...
