Brown leaves and stunted growth on Coast Live Oaks

I'm glad you brought that interesting point up. I've seen a few that made me think they were Yamadori, including this tree below(stock photo, not mine), one in Andrew Robson of Rakuyo's collection and one from John Thompson. But, I don't know if they are actually collected or not. I'm...

Brown leaves and stunted growth on Coast Live Oaks

Very true they do grow so slow. It's fun to see Eric Schrader's Valley Oak from Acorn, but they took a long time!

Brown leaves and stunted growth on Coast Live Oaks

Eric Shrader has grown the best Valley Oak i've seen from Seed many years back. But yes, not too many of them in Bonsai and it's such a great species visually speaking. I have heard putting them in a Bonsai pot, they can be challenging from a horticultural perspective-but if they can grow...

Pruning maples flush or leave a stub

Generally speaking, with really small cuts you can cut flush or concave, while larger cuts you'll want to leave some length, respecting and allowing the tree to die back to the branch collar, then coming back and re-addressing the cut once the branch has died back.

Brown leaves and stunted growth on Coast Live Oaks

Issues like this will generally improve as your overall horticultural care increases. This could be from factors relating to light requirements, obtaining correct balance of water and oxygen, soil, water quality, nutrition, etc. These areas we can all continue to improve in and is part of the...

3D printed molds for concrete pots

Great work on the molds. A few years back there was a gentleman who made many beautiful concrete pots. Fast forward to now and almost all those pots broke:( I'm sure there's a mixture where you could get it right. I'm curious, have you checked out Richard Kearney's work? He's on...

I really appreciate you taking us along on your adventure! The pics are awesome, this is some really cool stuff:) A few questions i'm curious about: -What is the difference between Bonsai and Bonbai? I haven't heard much about Bonbai and I'm curious to hear anything you've learned about it...

Help with a recently yellowing Coast Live Oak

-Would it be better to refrain from removing any of the existing soil to minimize stress as much as possible? I would remove the tree from it's current pot and use a chop stick, or root hook to gently comb the roots out. I might actually water the tree once you've taken the tree out to see how...

    US Bonsai in 20 years?

I think the biggest change in the last 15 yrs for American Bonsai has been all the younger people doing apprenticeships and sharing the info they learned both online and in person. While all these people were around in 2010, their impact to American Bonsai was significantly less -Peter Tea...
