My good friend and namesake Vance Wood passed away from a long battle with cancer. May he rest in peace.

I met Woody back in Michigan when I was president of Four Seasons Bonsai around 1980 or so. He joined the club and brought a lot of discussion to that organization and over the years we became good friends.

Later over the years he was one of the many presidents that gave guidance to the organization on its journey to host the MABA 2000 Kimura expo.
I congratulate Wood on his knowledge and passion for the art form of Bonsai!

Mugho Man we’re gonna miss you!

This is heartbreaking news. I've known Vance W. for going on three decades through various changing bonsai forums. He was always helpful, knowledgeable, willing to share and a bit of a curmudgeon (which is always welcome 😁 ). That he will be missed is an understatement. He is a huge loss to the bonsai community. I hope his spirit of giving and passing on knowledge continues here.

I think this post should be moved over to "General" instead of posted here. I stumbled upon it.

I'm very sorry to hear that. I thought he had just quit posting. He was a bit salty at times but I enjoyed that, reminded me of my dad. But he was generous with information and always willing to help those genuinely asking for guidance.

Vance Wood was the second user to register on this site (behind only @ynot). He registered on October 29, 2006, was a member for more than 17 years, and posted a total of 14,002 times. In addition to having a wicked sense of humor, Vance was also our local expert on mugo pines. This is very sad news. Vance will be missed here.

Vance's obituary can be viewed here.

Bummer. But one to be celebrated nonetheless.
Didn’t know him, but seemed to definitely be a big part of the bonsai community. May he rest in peace. 🙂

He hasn't post much lately so it helps to soften the blow a little bit... he will be missed around here

I met him once at the National Show in Rochester where he exhibited his prize Mugo Pine. In person, I found him kind, amiable, approachable, and very friendly. I spent a few hours getting to know him and was very glad I did. I’ve missed his voice around here and deeply regret his passing. RIP Vance!
