Korean Hornbeam no. 1

Lots of circling fine roots. Did not take off more than 2/3 definitely less just a lot of fine roots.. was a struggle to get into smaller pot but thank god for shohin soil.. just 100% shohin akadama with a few bigger pumice pebbles on drainage

IMG_4947.jpegI am obsessed with this pot .. I really don’t want to part with this tree but also know a bigger pot can do the tree well. Oh someone help.
This is the pot I am considering

I’m biased as I almost always prefer Japanese made pots over everything and love a Korean hornbeam in a blue pot but I think the larger pot will benefit the tree.

The pot change is temporary. Focus on the tree. Bigger legs will help for year. Then move it back for a 2025 show.

Your KHB is looking good!
Yeah I agree I agree .. the blue one isn’t music of a growing pot either but just enough so I don’t loose shallow rootage either

Doesn't have to be. You have your trunk.

I keep making mistakes with KHB where I wait too long to slow it down trying to get a just a little more caliper and I end up with a wonky top third. Let the tree lead, right?

You are just slowing down development in the shallow pot. BobbyLane told you that already and you know it to be true.
Look past your admiration of the pot and do what is best for the tree.

I had the same thing happen to me with a BRT. I loved the pot it was in but the tree didn't. I gave it a better pot for it and the tree thanked me by growing much better.

He told me to put in a grow pot which I’m not doing. And they was before I needed to regrow a new leader

IMG_5462.jpegIMG_5464.jpegPotted into a Nao green oval top dressing is hiding a bit of the base but this will help the tree grow more , develop better nebari than it had and overall growth , without sacrificing too much or too little in terms of pot size , and it still looks nice. Should be good for a couple growing seasons in here. And with closer buds I can cut back a bit on the bottom branches .. but also will be regrowing the top apex of the tree..

IMG_5657.jpegDid a hard cut back on some branches .. I didn’t like how I was getting leaf growth further out but have a lot of buds coming through .. this will serve much better this year now after this cut back.
