    Acer palmatum sharp's pygmy [#07]

As is the case every year, this tree needs to be thinned out without fail. Its density is profuse and if left alone many of the interior branches will wither in no time. This is only for those trees that are more developed and ramified. On young and more sparse trees this is not necessary...

    Acer palmatum sharp's pygmy [#07]

From experience I can tell when wire begins to bite in even slightly. With the deciduous this is often enough and branches are set. Of course, in those cases when a branch is not quite in the desired position I rewire it.

Great to see you if briefly Jelle! Wished I had more time to chat but they had me on the clock  Also good to see and meet some BNuts for the first time.

BONSAI SPRING FESTIVAL, WASHINGTON, DC MAY 10-12, 2024

I think they have allotted too much time for the demo specially because I believe I will be doing a maple. I don't think the demo will take long... certainly not 4 hours! With that said I have requested that if anyone wants to bring their tree(s) for me to take a look at and discuss design...

No, it's as simple as that!

    Shohin crabapple with fruit

Yes! Otherwise I would have had to go down in pot size gradually. In any case, when trees are grown in the ground one should always work the roots periodically much like we would do when they are grown in pots.

    BONSAI by the BAYOU 2024

This maple is excellent! It did not take much for Bjorn, Min Hsuan Lo and myself to agree to give this tree the top deciduous award.

    Shohin crabapple with fruit

Sorry I have no clue. Oldest tree in my collection. Bought it at MABS 25 years ago!

    Shohin crabapple with fruit

Yes looks much better now that is fuller. It needed a little time to adjust going from the field back into a pot. Evidence of the care we can give our trees as bonsai can exceed what they can do on their own.

New to Colorado Spruce, questions about styling

Colorado spruce in my experience is by far one of the toughest and dare say best spruces for bonsai. They can take a great deal of work and still bounce back with no issues. Very much unlike other more touchy spruce species such an Engelmann in which the work should be much more carefully...

    SHISHIGASHIRA GROUP PLANTING

You're not alone Judy. Same here. The leaves emphasize the different planes as they tend to come out tight and flat. I suppose we may feel a bit different about its winter look in 1000 years when the forest is well ramified! 🤣

    JAPANESE SNOWBELL

They are really beautiful particularly in flower. I would like to increase the caliper on mine a bit more but keep it relatively small. As you can imagine the can be quite expensive as bonsai.

    JAPANESE SNOWBELL

Be patient. As long as it's still green you are good. They like lots of water and do not tolerate dry conditions very well. Be aware that they often drop secondary and tertiary branches often during winter. They back bud with no problem even from old wood.

    SHISHIGASHIRA GROUP PLANTING

Thanks! Yes quite slow in developing. They tend to grow short tubular straight branching which is not ideal but overall an outstanding cultivar. They'll challenge your patience!

    SHISHIGASHIRA GROUP PLANTING

The smaller tree at the back helps add depth. It also flows left going along with the general direction. Sure, it may work also if planted in the front. A different look but I don't think necessarily better.

    SHISHIGASHIRA GROUP PLANTING

Yes, you should be able to air layer them with relative ease.
